Tank Cleaning Machines Suppliers
Between two charters stands a tank inspection, and between the last cargo and that inspection stands the washing plant. Tank cleaning machine suppliers equip that stage of the voyage: fixed programmable machines built into a tanker's deck plan, portable turbine-driven units lowered through cleaning openings, and the nozzles and drive assemblies around them that decide whether a tank passes on the first inspection or the third. The purchase looks like hardware; what it actually buys is time between cargoes.
Fixed Machines: The Deck-Mounted Fleet
On crude and product tankers the washing plant is permanent: single-nozzle or twin-nozzle machines mounted through the deck, each sweeping its programmed share of the tank surface in a slow helix as a gear train rotates and elevates the nozzle. The programmable generation - Scanjet's SC series and Alfa Laval's Gunclean Toftejorg TZ line dominate the installed base - adds sector washing, so a machine can concentrate on the shadow areas behind stringers and web frames instead of spraying the whole tank equally. The number and placement of machines is fixed at the design stage against the tank geometry, which shapes every later purchase: a replacement has to reproduce the original machine's throw, flow, and pattern, or the coverage calculation that the arrangement was approved against stops being true.
Portable Machines and the Butterworth Legacy
The portable tank washing machine is older than the fixed fleet and refuses to retire. Lowered on its hose through a dedicated deck opening, driven by the wash water itself through a small turbine, it needs no power supply and works in any tank a hose can reach - which keeps it standard equipment on product tankers, on chemical tonnage for spot duties, and in cargo holds. The Butterworth name became the verb for the whole activity, and portable machines from several makers still trade under that generic shadow. For the buyer the portable class is refreshingly simple: capacity, throw, weight, and the hose and coupling standard aboard are the entire specification conversation.
Crude Oil Washing Under MARPOL Annex I
On crude carriers the washing machines are a compliance system, not a convenience. MARPOL Annex I requires crude oil washing on crude tankers of 20,000 dwt and above, with the machines using the cargo itself as the washing medium and the whole operation run against an approved Crude Oil Washing Operations and Equipment Manual - under inert gas, with tank atmospheres held below 8 percent oxygen. The manual is the buying constraint people miss: it names the machines, their positions, and their programmed patterns. A replacement that does not match the listed characteristics is not a spare part but an amendment to an approved document, which is why like-for-like sourcing dominates this segment and why installation and cycle verification are usually booked together with the hardware through tank cleaning machine service companies.
Chemical and Product Trades: Different Metallurgy, Same Geometry
Chemical tankers ask the same geometry to survive different liquids. Machines for these trades run in stainless steel rather than the gunmetal and bronze of the crude fleet, both for corrosion resistance and to keep stainless cargo tanks passivation-clean; hot washing and Annex II prewash duties add temperature ratings to the specification. Product tankers sit between the two worlds and often carry both fixed and portable capability. The material choice is trade-driven and permanent - a bronze-bodied machine has no place above a methanol tank - so the supplier's first question should be the cargo list, not the tank size.
Sizing: Throw, Pressure, and the Shadow Test
Three numbers size a washing machine against a tank, and only one of them is on the nameplate. Throw - the effective jet reach at working pressure - has to exceed the longest diagonal the machine is responsible for, with margin, because a jet at the end of its reach cleans by wetting rather than by impact. Working pressure and flow decide how much of the pump and heating capacity each running machine consumes, which caps how many machines wash simultaneously and therefore how long the whole tank set takes. The third number is the one that catches designs out: the shadow count. Every stringer, web frame, and corrugation casts a spray shadow, and the machine arrangement either covers each shadow from a second angle or leaves it for hand work. A supplier who asks for the tank structure drawing before quoting is running that shadow test; one who quotes from tank volume alone is not.
Purchase Checks That Save a Docking
- Manual and drawing match - for COW and fixed installations, the offered machine reproduces the throw, flow rate, and pattern in the approved arrangement, documented, not asserted.
- Coverage data with the quote - throw curves at working pressure, so the machine's reach can be checked against the actual tank depth and web spacing.
- Material certificates for the trade - stainless grades or bronze bodies certified against the cargo list the vessel actually carries.
- Used and reconditioned options - machines recovered from recycled tonnage remain a legitimate route for older product tankers, provided pattern testing and measurement records come with them.
- A consumables path from day one - nozzles, gears, and seal kits flowing through tank cleaning machine spare parts suppliers, because the machine is a housing around parts that wear.
Open the inquiry with the vessel's trade, the tank arrangement drawing, and - for fixed replacements - the machine list from the washing manual. The vendors below can be sorted by brand, country, verification, supplier specification including used equipment, and IACS class approvals, and tank cleaning machine suppliers who see the manual page in the first message quote a compliant machine instead of a catalogue guess.
