Marine Long Range Acoustic Device Suppliers

A long range acoustic device, or LRAD, is an acoustic hailing device that projects a clear voice message, and a powerful warning tone, in a focused beam that carries far beyond the reach of an ordinary loudhailer. On a ship it is a security and communication tool: it warns off an approaching craft, hails another vessel over engine and sea noise, and gives a crew a way to challenge and deter a small boat before it closes. Long range acoustic device suppliers provide these units for merchant, offshore, naval, and patrol vessels.

What an LRAD Does

The point of the device is the beam. A normal speaker spreads its sound in every direction and loses intelligibility over distance, while an LRAD concentrates it into a narrow cone that stays clear at ranges measured in hundreds of metres and, on the larger units, well over a kilometre. That lets a bridge deliver a spoken instruction that is understood at a distance, in a language the target can follow, and switch to a loud deterrent tone if the warning is ignored. The common shipboard uses are:

  • Vessel protection - warning and deterring skiffs and small craft in high-risk areas, as part of a ship's self-protection measures against piracy.
  • Port and anchorage security - challenging craft that approach a berthed or anchored ship or an offshore installation.
  • Vessel-to-vessel hailing - passing a clear instruction to another ship or to a boat when radio is not an option.
  • Safety and search - broadcasting to people in the water or on a drifting craft over wind and sea noise.

Types and How They Are Fitted

The units run from handheld and portable models a security team can carry to fixed emitters mounted on the bridge wing or a mast, and up to large vessel-mounted heads on a remote pan-and-tilt. The bigger installations are often slewed to cue from the radar or an electro-optical camera, so an operator can put the beam onto a contact the moment it is detected, which is why an LRAD is frequently specified alongside marine night vision systems as one layer of a vessel-protection fit. Power, mounting, and a control position have to suit the ship, so the choice of unit follows the vessel and the threat it faces.

Choosing a Unit

The term LRAD comes from the maker that first brought the technology to market, and it is now used across the industry for acoustic hailing devices in general, so the model, its rated range, and whether it is portable or a fixed remote-controlled head matter more than the name. Because it is a security purchase rather than a class-required fit, the decision usually rests on the coverage the ship needs and how the unit ties into the bridge or the security console. Filter the long range acoustic device suppliers below by whether you need a new unit, a used one, or a reseller, and where a fitted device later needs a part, that comes through LRAD spare parts.
