Viscometer Suppliers
When a main engine starts hunting on load, and the funnel shows black smoke, the first parameter a duty engineer reaches for is viscosity at the injector inlet. Holding heavy fuel within the engine maker's window — typically 10 to 15 cSt — is what separates clean combustion from a stack of unplanned maintenance hours.
RecordsMarine lists vetted viscometer suppliers across Europe, Asia, and the Gulf, helping superintendents match sensor technology to the engine maker's specification without working through layered agencies.
Why Fuel Viscosity Drives Combustion Quality
HFO leaves the bunker tank at roughly 180 to 380 cSt at 50 °C. Before it reaches the high-pressure fuel pumps, it has to be heated down to around 13 cSt so the injectors atomise it correctly. Too thick and the spray pattern collapses, fouling injector tips and dropping combustion efficiency. Too thin and the fuel leaks past plunger clearances, throwing off injection timing.
The viscometer sits inline, feeds its signal to a PID controller, and the controller drives a three-way steam or electric heater valve. That control loop runs continuously — and on a modern vessel switching between VLSFO, MGO, and HSHFO multiple times per voyage, it gets very little rest.
Vibrating Element vs Twin Capillary Sensors
Two technology families dominate the engine room. Twin capillary instruments, descended from the Halikkainen design and still common in older VAF Viscochief installations, push fuel through a small-bore capillary with a slow-running gear pump and measure the pressure drop. They are accurate but contain moving parts that wear, and they need periodic recalibration.
Vibrating element sensors — Emerson Solartron 7829, VAF Viscosense, Sofraser MIVI, Hydramotion ViscoJet, Cambridge VISCOfuel — read the damping of a resonant rod or torsion element. No moving parts, self-cleaning, and effectively maintenance-free.
Capable suppliers of viscometers can quote a drop-in replacement in either technology, matched to the existing flange face-to-face and signal output, so a sensor upgrade does not force any pipe rework.
Where Viscometers Are Installed Onboard
The classic location is immediately upstream of the main engine fuel pumps, but the same instrument family covers several other duty points:
- Main and auxiliary diesel fuel inlets after the booster module
- Oil-fired boiler burner fuel lines
- Inert gas generator fuel control on tankers and gas carriers
- Bunker reception lines for in-line quality checks
- Onboard fuel labs running kinematic viscosity per ISO 3104
Fuel Switching, ECAs, and the Compliance Window
With MARPOL Annex VI capping sulphur at 0.10 % inside SECAs — Baltic, North Sea, North American, Caribbean, and now the Mediterranean — vessels are switching fuels far more often than a decade ago.
Each grade has a different viscosity-temperature curve, and the controller has to manage the transition without dropping out of the engine maker's window for more than a few minutes. Class societies (DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, BV, ClassNK, RINA) require type-approved instruments for the main propulsion fuel system, and most engine OEMs — MAN Energy Solutions, WinGD, Wärtsilä — name approved sensor families in their service letters. Suppliers of viscosimeters working at this level should be able to produce the current type-approval certificates on request, not legacy paperwork from a previous certification cycle.
Brands and Class Approvals Engine Rooms Recognise
The vendor names that turn up most often on engine room single-line diagrams include VAF Instruments (Viscosense 3, Viscochief, 771 controller), Emerson with the Solartron 7829 ViscoMaster, Sofraser (MIVI sensor families), Hydramotion (ViscoJet, XL7), Cambridge Viscosity / PAC (VISCOpro, VISCOfuel), Parker Kittiwake, Martechnic, LEMIS Process, and Avenisense. ATEX and IECEx ratings matter for tanker, FPSO, and LNG carrier applications, so a capable vendor will keep both standard and Ex-rated heads available.
Pairing the viscometer purchase with the right marine fuel oil treatment chemicals — purifiers, homogenisers, and conditioning modules — keeps the whole fuel chain on a single commissioning visit.
Lab and Portable Units for Bunker Verification
Inline sensors handle continuous control, but bunker quality disputes are still settled in the lab. Glass capillary kinematic measurements at 50 °C — Cannon-Fenske and Ubbelohde tubes — remain the reference method under ISO 8217. Many onboard labs carry a Stanhope-Seta KV3 or an Anton Paar SVM portable for a quick reading before signing the bunker delivery note.
A well-stocked vendor covers inline process instruments and benchtop or portable lab equipment under one quotation, which simplifies frame agreements and crew training.
What Strong Viscometer Suppliers Get Right
The vendors worth keeping on a long-term agreement share a handful of traits. Their type-approval certificates are current, not three cycles old. Their service network actually reaches Singapore, Rotterdam, Fujairah, Houston, and Busan with technicians who can commission and tune at berth. They stock electronic controllers and sensor heads regionally rather than airfreighting every order from a single European warehouse. And they hand over a fuel compatibility matrix showing instrument behaviour across MGO, MDO, VLSFO, and HSHFO — not a generic data sheet that stops at one fuel grade.

The vendor list below covers inline process viscometers, electronic controllers, and portable lab instruments, with filters for class approval, brand portfolio, sensor technology, and regional service footprint.
RecordsMarine maintains an open directory of viscometer suppliers so chief engineers and procurement teams can shortlist a manufacturer or regional distributor in one place, send a clean RFQ, and move on to the next item on the docking spec.
