Wind Speed & Direction Sensor Suppliers

A wind speed and direction sensor sits at the masthead and tells the bridge how hard the wind is blowing and where it is coming from. Its reading feeds the wind display, the conning and bridge systems, and on many ships the crane and mooring operations and the dynamic positioning system, so it is a small sensor that a good deal of the ship's work depends on. Unlike a plain anemometer, which measures speed alone, this sensor reports direction as well, which is what lets the bridge know the wind relative to the ship. Wind speed and direction sensor suppliers provide these units and the displays they drive.

What It Measures and Why It Matters

The sensor reads apparent wind, the wind the moving ship actually feels, and the system works out the true wind from that reading together with the ship's own speed and heading. That matters wherever a wind limit governs an operation:

  • Cargo and crane work - deck cranes and container gear have wind speed limits above which lifting has to stop.
  • Helideck operations - the wind speed and direction over the deck decide whether a helicopter can land.
  • Mooring and berthing - the wind on the beam is what a master watches when bringing a ship alongside.
  • Dynamic positioning - a DP system uses the wind feed to hold station, so the sensor is part of a safety-critical loop.

Mechanical or Ultrasonic

Two kinds of sensor do the job. The mechanical type uses spinning cups or a propeller for speed and a vane for direction, which is simple and proven but has moving parts, so its cups, vane, and bearings are the common wind speed and direction sensor spare parts. The ultrasonic type has none: it measures the time sound takes to cross between fixed transducers and derives both speed and direction from that, so it holds up well in salt air and is the common choice on new fits. In cold trades either type is specified with a heater to keep ice and snow from freezing the reading.

Output and Fitting

The sensor sends its reading as an analog signal, a synchro feed, or a serial output such as NMEA to the bridge display and the systems that use it, so the output has to match what the ship expects. Siting matters as much as the sensor: it goes high and clear of the funnel and masts, where their turbulence will not distort the flow, and its zero has to be aligned to the ship's head so direction reads true. Compare the wind speed and direction sensor suppliers below by brand and by whether you need a new unit, a used one, or a reseller; the masthead fitting and alignment that follow are the work of wind speed and direction sensor services.
