Navigation & Dynamic Positioning Systems Suppliers
Hold a dive support vessel two metres off station and a diver's umbilical comes under load; lose heading on a shuttle tanker during bow loading and the job ends in an emergency disconnect. That operational reality shapes how shipowners evaluate dynamic positioning systems suppliers: every controller, position reference sensor, and I/O card in the delivery chain feeds a system whose only job is to keep the vessel exactly where the work requires, on its own thrusters, in weather that is actively trying to move it.
The purchasing scope runs wider than the DP controller itself. It covers operator stations and joystick panels, motion reference units and wind sensors, DGNSS and relative position reference receivers, spare I/O and network modules for installed systems, and the bridge electronics that share the same consoles. What separates a dependable source from a risky one is rarely price - it is whether the equipment arrives with the certification, software compatibility, and configuration history that a classed DP vessel has to document.
DP Equipment Class Drives the Equipment List
IMO MSC/Circ.645, updated by MSC.1/Circ.1580 in 2017, defines three DP equipment classes. Class 1 accepts that a single failure may cause loss of position. Class 2 requires that no single fault in an active component - generator, thruster, switchboard, controller, remote valve - causes loss of position. Class 3 additionally has to survive fire or flooding in any one compartment. Classification societies translate these into notations such as DNV DYNPOS-AUT, DYNPOS-AUTR, and DYNPOS-AUTRO, or ABS DPS-1, DPS-2, and DPS-3.
For the buyer, the notation defines the bill of material. A class 2 fit doubles controllers and networks and typically triples the key sensors: three gyrocompasses, three motion reference units, three wind sensors. A class 3 fit adds a backup control station behind an A.60 fire division with its own reference input and cabling routed apart from the main system. Two vessels of the same type can therefore carry very different equipment lists, and a vendor quoting sensors or spares needs the notation, not just the vessel description.
Position Reference Systems and Sensors
DGNSS is the workhorse absolute reference offshore, with satellite or network correction services layered over the raw GNSS solution. Close to platforms and other structures, relative references take over: laser units such as CyScan and Fanbeam tracking reflector prisms on the structure, radar-based RadaScan and SceneScan, hydroacoustic systems such as HiPAP working against seabed transponders, and taut wire in moderate water depths. Established practice for class 2 and class 3 operations is to run three enabled references drawing on at least two different measurement principles, so a GNSS degradation does not remove every input at once.
Procurement follows the same split. Receivers, antennas, and correction subscriptions come through DGPS suppliers, while relative-reference hardware is usually bought from the DP system maker or its service network, because sensor firmware and controller software versions have to match before the reference is accepted into the position solution.
The DP Control System Brand Landscape
The installed base concentrates around a handful of control system families: Kongsberg K-Pos (DP-12 and DP-22 among the common variants), Wartsila NACOS Platinum DP, Navis NavDP 4000, Praxis Mega-Guard DP, Marine Technologies Bridge Mate, and ABB's DP offering for electric-propulsion tonnage. Portfolio history matters when chasing parts: Rolls-Royce Icon DP, for example, moved into Kongsberg's commercial marine portfolio, which changed the spares channel for vessels fitted with it.
Systems drop out of production long before vessels stop trading. Operator consoles, UPS units, and I/O cards for discontinued generations circulate through independent stockists and the reconditioned market, often stripped from recycled tonnage and bench-tested. Independent dynamic positioning systems suppliers keep those older installations serviceable when the OEM path has closed - provided the buyer confirms hardware revision and software compatibility before the unit ships.
Thrusters and the Control Interface
A DP controller is only as effective as the thrust it commands. Tunnel thrusters, azimuthing units, and main propeller-rudder combinations each return feedback signals - pitch, azimuth angle, RPM - and a drifting feedback potentiometer or a failed interface card degrades station keeping just as surely as a sensor fault. When the failure sits on the actuation side rather than in the control system, azimuth and tunnel thruster suppliers cover that part of the installation, from complete units to feedback and control components.
What to Look For in a Supplier
- Brand and generation coverage - confirmation that the vendor supports the installed model and software revision, not just the make. A K-Pos spare is not interchangeable across hardware generations.
- Certification paperwork - type approval and class documentation delivered with the unit and matched to the vessel's notation, so the attending surveyor accepts the replacement without a second visit.
- FMEA and trials awareness - parts and modifications that respect the vessel's failure modes and effects analysis (IMCA M 166 gives the accepted methodology) and its annual DP trials programme under IMCA M 190.
- Redundancy spares depth - controllers, network switches, motion reference units, and reference-system components held on the shelf, because a class 2 vessel with one failed redundant element is one further fault away from an incident.
- Logistics reach - warehousing positioned along the vessel's trading pattern and a genuine 24/7 contact, since a DP vessel off charter over a missing I/O card loses more per day than the card costs.
Most DP procurement starts from what is already installed. Note the make, model, and software revision of the control system, the reference sensors fitted, and the class notation, then compare the vendors below on brand coverage, IACS class approvals, and verification status. An inquiry that opens with those details gets a usable quotation from dynamic positioning systems suppliers in days rather than weeks.
