Forward Looking Sonar Suppliers
An echo sounder tells the bridge the depth under the keel, which is already too late for an uncharted rock or a bank shoaling ahead of the bow. A forward looking sonar looks out in front of and below the vessel instead, giving warning of obstacles, shallows, ice, and hazards while there is still time and sea room to act on them. What a Forward Looking Sonar Does
The difference from a depth sounder is direction. Where an echo sounder reads straight down, a forward looking sonar scans the water ahead, picking up rocks, reefs, shoaling ground, ice, floating containers, and other uncharted dangers out to hundreds of metres in front. The 3D systems build a live map of the water column and seabed ahead, so the officer sees the hazard developing rather than meeting it. It earns its place where the charts are thin - coastal and reef approaches, polar and expedition trades, and anchorages that were never properly surveyed.
Three Kinds of System
Forward looking sonar comes in a few forms, and they differ in coverage and price:
- 3D forward-looking systems - the FarSounder type, sending a single ping and processing the return into a three-dimensional picture of the water and seabed ahead, refreshed every few seconds.
- Searchlight sonars - the Furuno CH type, sweeping a narrower beam around to build the image, and long established on fishing and naval vessels.
- Forward-scan units - simpler and cheaper, suiting yachts and smaller craft that want obstacle warning without the cost and hull work of a full 3D array.
Matching the type to the vessel is the first decision, before any question of brand.
Range Against Speed, and the Fit
The number that matters most is detection range set against the vessel's speed. A forward looking sonar only helps if it sees a hazard far enough ahead to stop or alter course at the speed being made: a system reaching a kilometre gives a ship at fifteen knots roughly two minutes, and less as speed rises, which is why fast craft need more range than owners often expect. Beyond range, the hull unit is either fixed or retractable through a sea chest, a choice that shapes both the installation and the docking plan, and the picture has to reach the officer conning the ship through the ECDIS or a dedicated display. A forward looking sonar is not a SOLAS requirement, so it is fitted as a deliberate safety upgrade, and where only a part has failed that is a job for forward looking sonar spare parts.
The reef-picking range a superyacht wants is not what an expedition ship in ice needs, so the water the vessel actually works is the place to start.
