Weather Radars Suppliers
At sea, the earliest warning of a squall line or a storm cell ahead usually comes off the radar. A marine weather radar is the equipment that turns precipitation into a picture the bridge can act on, showing rain, squalls, and heavy cells at range so the officer can alter course before the weather arrives. On most ships this capability is built into the navigation radar; on larger and specialized tonnage it extends into dedicated meteorological monitoring systems. Marine weather radar suppliers range from the makers who build these sets - Furuno, JRC, Sperry Marine, Koden, and Kelvin Hughes - to the distributors and electronics integrators who fit and support them.
How a Ship Sees Weather on Radar
The band decides what the radar does with rain. X-band, around 9 GHz with a 3 cm wavelength, reflects strongly off precipitation, so it paints rain cells and squall lines in sharp detail and is the better band for reading the weather itself. S-band, around 3 GHz with a 10 cm wavelength, does the opposite - it largely sees through rain, holding vessel and landmass targets that heavy precipitation would otherwise hide. That is why many SOLAS ships carry both: the X-band to read the weather and close traffic, the S-band to keep a clear target picture in the middle of it. Modern sets layer tracking and storm-avoidance tools on top, turning a raw echo into the course and speed vectors the watch can act on in seconds.
What Distinguishes the Equipment
Above the band, the differences are approval, scanner, and transceiver. Radars on SOLAS vessels have to meet IMO performance standards and carry type approval for the ship's size, which is not optional on classed tonnage. The scanner - the open-array antenna - comes in different lengths, and a longer array gives a tighter beam and better target discrimination. The transceiver is either a traditional magnetron set or a solid-state design, the latter needing no magnetron replacement and giving better short-range detail. Integration matters as much as the box: a weather radar rarely stands alone, and it has to talk to the ECDIS and the rest of the integrated bridge.
Brands, Approval, and Fit
Furuno is the most widely fitted radar brand on merchant tonnage, with JRC, Sperry Marine, Koden, and Kelvin Hughes established alongside it. On a ship, matching the new set to the bridge already installed usually counts for more than the badge, because a radar shares its display, controls, and cabling with the rest of the integrated bridge. Class and flag approval have to line up with the vessel, and a supplier authorized for the maker can confirm both before quoting.
Choosing a Supplier
For a directory buyer, marine weather radar suppliers differ mostly by brand authorization, integration capability, and support reach. A supplier who can match the set to the existing bridge, carry the IMO approval the flag needs, and reach the vessel's ports for commissioning and service is worth more than a lower quote that leaves the ship to integrate the box on its own. If the radar itself is sound and only a component has failed, that is a parts order rather than a new set, and it belongs with weather radar spare parts suppliers.
The surest route to a workable quote is the vessel's particulars and the bridge already fitted: the ship's size and flag, the existing radar maker and display, and whether the need is a full set or an added weather capability.
