Inertial Navigation System Suppliers
An inertial navigation system works out where a ship is, which way it is heading, and how it is moving from its own sensors alone, with no satellite or outside signal to lean on. That independence is what makes it valuable where GNSS is unreliable or deliberately denied - survey work, dynamic positioning, naval operations, and high latitudes - and why it sits at the heart of the most demanding bridges. What an INS Delivers
An INS outputs heading, attitude, and motion continuously, and when it is aided by GNSS it holds an accurate position straight through the gaps where the satellite signal drops. On a ship that output feeds the dynamic positioning system, the gyrocompass function, the survey sensors, the stabilizers, and the integrated bridge, so a good INS is quietly the reference the rest of them trust. It also supplies the heave, pitch, and roll that a multibeam survey or a motion-compensated crane depends on, which is why the same box often doubles as the vessel's motion reference.
Aided, Not Standalone
An INS is almost never run bare. On the surface it is aided by GNSS; underwater it is aided by a Doppler velocity log or acoustic positioning, and the two halves correct each other - the inertial sensors smooth the solution and carry it through the moments the aiding drops, while the aiding checks the slow drift every inertial sensor has. How well a system blends the two, and how long it can coast on its own when the aiding is lost, is most of what separates one unit from the next.
The Sensor and the Grade
Underneath that is the gyro and the grade the system is built to. Most marine systems use a fibre optic gyroscope, with ring-laser and other technologies at the high end. The grade - navigation, survey, or tactical - is really a measure of how far the output can be trusted on its own before the aiding has to correct it, and it sets the price accordingly. A survey ship laying multibeam over a wreck and a coastal DP support vessel are not buying the same class of unit.
Approval, Integration, and Sourcing
Where the INS provides the ship's heading it is type-approved as a marine device, and it has to integrate cleanly with the DP, the ECDIS, and the rest of the bridge rather than stand alone. Many inertial systems are dual-use and export-controlled, so sourcing brings end-use documentation with it as well as a part number.
