Inertial Navigation System (INS) Service Providers
An inertial navigation system is only as good as its alignment and calibration - the sensors themselves rarely wear, but their output drifts and errs if the system is not set up and maintained correctly. Inertial navigation system services cover that side of the work: installation and alignment, calibration, fault diagnosis and repair, and the software and firmware support that keeps the system accurate.
Alignment and Calibration
With no bearings or spinning mass to fail, an INS needs calibration far more than it needs mechanical repair. It has to be aligned to the ship's reference first - a static gyrocompassing alignment alongside, or a moving alignment worked up on passage - and its bias and scale-factor errors corrected, with the GNSS or acoustic aiding tuned so the two hold position together. Any change to the sensors or the mounting forces a recalibration afterward, because a system trusted with the ship's heading and the DP reference cannot be left uncertain.
Lever-Arm and Boresight
The step that most often goes wrong is geometry. The INS measures motion at its own location, but the position the ship actually cares about is at the GNSS antenna, the multibeam transducer, or the crane tip, so the offsets to those points - the lever arms - and the angular alignment between the INS and them - the boresight - have to be measured and entered exactly. A lever arm wrong by a metre, or a boresight out by a fraction of a degree, throws every derived position out quietly, in a way no self-test will flag. Getting this right is a large part of what the service is worth.
Repair and the Wider System
When a fault is real, it is usually electronic - a board, a power supply, or a sensor module - and it is traced by maker-approved and IACS-recognised technicians rather than swapped blind. Because the INS feeds the DP, the gyrocompass, and the bridge, a fault or a bad calibration reaches well beyond one box, which is why the work goes to people who can restore the type-approved performance and record it. A drifting INS quietly corrupts everything downstream of it, so a fault is worth chasing before it misleads the DP or the survey.
