A symptom that shows on the ECDIS can come from a sensor, an interface card, or the network itself, so diagnosis follows the data back to its source. Upgrades are common too, as owners add or replace subsystems without renewing the whole bridge, and each change has to be integrated and re-approved rather than simply plugged in. Class and the Bridge Survey
An IBS is type-approved navigation equipment, so its condition is checked at the periodic radio and bridge navigation survey, and the provider is expected to hold the maker approvals and the IACS recognition to work on it and record the result. A ship cannot be signed off with a degraded bridge system, so a fault close to survey needs a team that can attend, diagnose, and restore the approved performance before the surveyor arrives, sometimes as a riding team that sails with the vessel.
