FRAMO Systems Suppliers
Most FRAMO procurement decisions are not made under pressure. They land on the technical superintendent's desk during newbuild specification with a Korean shipyard, or surface during drydock planning when the existing pump fleet has reached the end of its economic life on a 15-year-old chemical tanker. FRAMO systems suppliers sit at that decision point: providing the SD-series submerged cargo pumps, hydraulic power units, cofferdam arrangements, and control packages that get specified into the new pump fleet, alongside the technical attendance that gets the equipment commissioned correctly.
When the Specification Calls for FRAMO
FRAMO appears on a procurement list for one of three reasons. The first is fleet standardisation: operators running existing FRAMO tonnage prefer to keep the brand consistent across vessels because spare parts, crew familiarity, and service support all carry over from one hull to the next. The second is yard specification: several Korean and Chinese shipyards default to FRAMO on their chemical and product tanker designs, and the owner inherits that choice unless they actively negotiate alternatives. The third is technical performance on aggressive cargo: super-duplex SD-pumps for IBC Code Category X chemicals are an area where FRAMO has long-standing reference vessels, and that history weighs against switching brand mid-fleet.
What Arrives in the Equipment Order
A FRAMO order is rarely just pumps. The full equipment package typically includes:
- SD-series submerged cargo pumps - sized to tank volume and discharge rate (SD75, SD100, SD125, SD150, SD200, SD300 across the standard range).
- Hydraulic power unit (HPU) - sized to drive the entire pump fleet plus anti-heeling and ballast lift load with engineered margin.
- Cofferdam arrangement and sealing system - matched to cargo chemistry and tank arrangement.
- PLC-based control system with HMI - integrating cargo monitoring, pressure transducers, and remote operation from the cargo control room.
- Installation drawings and isometric piping plans - prepared against the vessel's general arrangement and lift schedules.
- Commissioning attendance and FAT/SAT documentation - delivered by the OEM technical team across the project lifecycle.
Sizing the SD-Pump Range to the Cargo and the Tank
SD-pump selection is driven by three values: required flow rate in cubic metres per hour, total pump head accounting for tank height plus discharge piping resistance, and material compatibility against the cargo schedule. A 30,000 dwt chemical tanker carrying parcels across IBC Code Categories X, Y, and Z typically runs SD150 or SD200 pumps in super-duplex (UNS S32750) material for the most aggressive parcels, with lower-spec materials acceptable on dedicated product or crude service. The HPU is then sized to drive all pumps simultaneously at full discharge plus a margin for anti-heeling, with hydraulic flow and pressure calculated against the worst-case combined load. A capable supplier produces the sizing report and the chemical compatibility statement before quoting, not after.
New, Authorised Distributor, or Reclaimed Equipment
The supply path matters as much as the product. New equipment direct from Framo AS in Norway carries the full OEM warranty and engineering support, with authorised distributors providing the same line at slightly extended lead times for non-priority specifications. The reclaimed market is a serious procurement option for fleet operators rebuilding older tonnage: ship-recycling yards in India and Bangladesh feed a steady stream of decommissioned SD-pumps, HPUs, and control panels into specialist suppliers, with units in serviceable condition refurbished and recertified before resale. For vessels already running a FRAMO installation that needs consumable support rather than full equipment replacement, vetted FRAMO spare parts suppliers handle the impellers, seals, and HPU cartridges against the SD-pump generation already on board.
FAT, SAT, Commissioning, and Class Approval
The project lifecycle from purchase order to operational handover follows a standard sequence on FRAMO equipment. Factory acceptance test at the Framo facility in Norway verifies pump performance against the specification curve. Site acceptance test happens at the building yard, with each pump installed, the HPU pressurised, and the control system integrated against the vessel's electrical and automation backbone. Commissioning brings the pump fleet into service against actual cargo or test water on shakedown, and the OEM warranty clock starts at handover. IACS class society witnessing runs through the sequence (DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, RINA, ClassNK, KR, or CCS depending on registry), with IBC Code or IGC Code compliance documented at each stage. Beyond commissioning, in-service overhauls and scheduled maintenance fall to dedicated marine pump service companies that work alongside the FRAMO equipment vendor across the docking interval.
What to Verify When Procuring FRAMO Equipment
When you compare potential FRAMO equipment vendors, weigh the practical evidence rather than the brochure language:
- Sourcing channel clarity - new from Framo AS, authorised distributor, or refurbished from ship-recycling, with the path flagged transparently on the quotation.
- SD-pump sizing report - flow, head, and material selection calculated against the actual tank arrangement, not a catalogue lookup.
- Material compatibility statement - signed against the vessel's cargo schedule, with IBC Code Category for chemical or IGC for gas referenced explicitly.
- FAT and SAT with class attendance - documented test procedures, witnessing arrangements, and certificate format the class surveyor accepts.
- OEM warranty terms - duration, what is covered, transferable to new owners, and clarity on whether warranty is impacted by reclaimed-equipment purchase paths.
Vendors that meet a chemical or product tanker's FRAMO specification typically come through one of three channels: Framo AS direct, an authorised distributor network, or a refurbished-equipment specialist serving rebuilt older tonnage. Filter by country, verification, supplier specification (credit terms, reseller, used equipment), and IACS class approval to shortlist a partner whose procurement path, registry, and project timeline match the specification on your desk.
