Inmarsat C Suppliers
Inmarsat C is the quiet workhorse of ship messaging. It is a low-rate satellite data terminal that sends and receives text, distress alerts, and safety broadcasts over a small antenna, cheaply and with a reliability the higher-bandwidth systems cannot match. It carries no voice and little data, but the safety and reporting job it does is why it is fitted on most merchant ships and approved for the GMDSS. Inmarsat C suppliers provide these terminals, from makers such as Furuno Felcom, JRC, Cobham Sailor, and Sperry.
What Inmarsat C Does
The system is store-and-forward messaging rather than a live connection. It sends distress alerts to a coast earth station and receives them back, works as the ship's Enhanced Group Call receiver for SafetyNET - the navigational and meteorological warnings and other maritime safety information broadcast to a sea area - and carries the LRIT position report and the SSAS security alert. Alongside that safety traffic it handles routine telex, email, and data reporting for the office. At around 600 bits per second it is slow by any modern measure, but the messages it moves are the ones that have to arrive.
A Terminal, Not a Dish
What sets Inmarsat C apart from VSAT or FleetBroadband is the antenna. It is small, passive, and omnidirectional, so it needs no stabilization and holds the link through any sea state or manoeuvre while drawing almost no power. Below deck sit the transceiver, the message terminal or EGC display and keyboard, a GPS input for position, and usually a printer that logs the safety messages as they arrive. Simple and rugged is the whole point: a system this basic rarely fails, and its few parts, when one does go, come through Inmarsat C spare parts.
GMDSS Role and Sea Area
Inmarsat C is type-approved GMDSS equipment for Sea Areas A1, A2, and A3, the ocean regions the network covers; it does not reach the polar Sea Area A4, which needs HF or a polar-capable provider. It is one part of the ship's GMDSS fit rather than a standalone box, and on modern bridges it increasingly runs alongside newer approved satellite providers rather than being replaced outright.
Most Inmarsat C purchases are a like-for-like replacement of an ageing terminal or a newbuild fit, so matching the unit to the bridge and the GMDSS obligation counts for more than headline features. Compare the Inmarsat C suppliers below by brand and class approval, and where a set needs fitting, programming, or its annual survey, Inmarsat C services handle that side.
