HF/MF SSB Radio Suppliers
Once a ship is beyond VHF range and cannot rely on satellite alone, the MF/HF single-sideband radio is what carries its voice, digital selective calling, and radiotelex over the horizon. It is the long-range and independent distress path in the GMDSS, required on vessels trading in Sea Areas A2, A3, and A4, and it still does a job no other single system quite replaces. What the Set Includes
An MF/HF SSB station is more than a transceiver. Around it sit the DSC controller that handles digital selective calling and the distress alert, the antenna tuner that matches the radio to a long wire or whip, the antenna itself, and the dedicated power supply and reserve battery that keep it alive when the ship's power fails. A radiotelex terminal for narrow-band direct printing is added where the trade needs it, along with the separate DSC watch receiver that listens for distress alerts around the clock.
Voice, DSC, and Radiotelex
The set does three jobs on the same set of frequencies. Radiotelephony carries voice, with 2182 kHz held as the MF distress and calling channel. Digital selective calling sends a coded distress alert, complete with the ship's identity and position, on 2187.5 kHz in the MF band and on a group of HF channels for ocean work, so a mayday reaches a coast station or another ship even through poor conditions. Narrow-band direct printing, or radiotelex, carries text and maritime safety information where voice would not get through. It is that combination, rather than raw transmitter power, that makes the SSB set the workhorse of both long-range distress and routine traffic.
How Far It Reaches, and the Sea Area
The reason there are two bands is range. MF around 2 MHz travels as a ground wave along the surface, good for roughly 150 nautical miles, which covers Sea Area A2. HF bounces off the ionosphere and skips over the horizon for thousands of miles, which is what Sea Area A3 and the polar A4 rely on where satellite cover thins or fails. SOLAS Chapter IV sets the carriage requirement for each area, so an A2 coaster carries MF while an ocean-going ship carries the full MF/HF capability. The set is GMDSS equipment, type-approved and part of the wider GMDSS fit rather than a standalone radio.
The sea area the vessel trades sets what it must carry, so an A2 coaster and an ocean-going A3 ship are not buying the same station.
