Conning Displays Suppliers

A conning display pulls together everything the officer at the conning position needs and puts it on one screen: heading, speed over ground and through water, rudder angle, rate of turn, thruster and propeller status, depth, wind, and position, all drawn from the ship's own sensors. It turns a scatter of separate instruments into a single manoeuvring picture, which is why it sits at the centre of a modern integrated bridge. Conning display suppliers carry these units and the systems behind them, from makers such as Furuno, JRC, Alphatron Marine, Raytheon Anschutz, and Kongsberg.

What a Conning Display Shows

The value of a conning display is consolidation. Instead of the watchkeeper reading a gyro repeater here, a log there, and a rudder indicator somewhere else, the display gathers the feeds and lays them out in one standardized view built for fast reading during close-quarters and berthing work. It takes its data from the gyro, the GPS, the speed log, the echo sounder, the rudder and thruster feedback, and the wind sensor, so the unit is only ever as good as its interfaces to the rest of the bridge, which is why installing and configuring it is a job of its own for conning display services.

Type Approval and Fit

On a SOLAS bridge a conning display meets IMO performance standards and carries the type approval the flag expects, usually as part of an integrated bridge or navigation system rather than a standalone screen. Matching the unit to the bridge already installed counts for more than the badge, since it has to speak to the existing sensors and share the console. Where the display is sound and only a component has failed, that is a job for conning display spare parts rather than a new system.

A conning display is bought as a newbuild fit, a bridge refit, or a like-for-like replacement of a model the maker has dropped. The conning display suppliers listed here can match a unit to the vessel's sensors and console, so tell them the bridge maker and the data feeds the display has to read, and the shortlist writes itself.
