Matching The Best Flowmeter Types for Common Shipboard Duties
Below is a practical guide to selecting the right meter for each duty. The aim is to choose a technology that stays reliable in real ship conditions - vibration, changing loads, viscosity swings, occasional air in the line, tight piping layouts, and limited space for maintenance.
For fuel consumption and engine/boiler fuel lines, the best fit is Coriolis mass flow and proven positive displacement (PD) meters:
- Coriolis mass flowmeters are widely chosen when you need high accuracy and extra variables (mass flow, density, temperature). A key reason in marine fuel work is handling entrained gas that can otherwise cause unstable readings. Some Coriolis designs include dedicated algorithms to maintain operation across a wide range of gas fractions.
- PD meters (e.g., rotary piston / oval gear types) remain common for fuel and lube oil where viscosity varies and you want strong low-flow performance. Some marine fuel flowmeters are designed for compact installs and can be mounted on suction or pressure side of pumps, with simple on-board monitoring and repairability. Comparing Coriolis mass or PD flowmeter suppliers, pay attention to viscosity range (HFO/MGO), pump pulsation, and whether strainers can be serviced easily.

For ultrasonics, accuracy depends heavily on pipe condition (liners, scaling, paint layers, wall thickness, and good coupling). For steam and utility services, the best fit is vortex flowmeters, with differential pressure (DP) solutions used where project specifications or existing piping arrangements require it:
- Vortex is commonly selected for steam because it handles typical steam duties well and can be specified with useful diagnostics and stable performance when installed correctly.
- DP/orifice remains common in established plant standards, but it brings pressure loss and additional installation and maintenance considerations. Confirm steam condition (wet/saturated/superheated), required pressure drop limits, insulation and heat-loss effects, and installation guidance for stable readings.
For low-flow dosing, additives, and small-bore lines, the best fit is small-size Coriolis meters and specialized low-flow meters designed for stable readings at very low rates. Pay attention to mounting orientation, pulsation damping, and how the meter behaves if the line intermittently runs empty.
For cargo transfer, the best fit is high-accuracy Coriolis or ultrasonic systems selected to match the required measurement standard. Confirm the measurement acceptance criteria, calibration traceability, data logging needs, and what verification approach is expected during operations.
