Thermal Oil Boiler Suppliers
A thermal oil boiler heats a ship without steam. Instead of raising high-pressure steam, it circulates a heat-transfer oil in a closed loop and passes it through heat exchangers wherever heat is needed - cargo tanks on a product or chemical tanker, the heavy fuel oil settling and service tanks, the fuel before the engine, and the accommodation and domestic hot water. Because the oil carries high temperature at little more than atmospheric pressure, the system avoids the high-pressure drum, the feed-water treatment, and the corrosion that come with a steam boiler. Thermal oil boiler suppliers range from the makers who build these units - Alfa Laval Aalborg, Kangrim, Parat Halvorsen, and Saacke among them - to the distributors who supply and support them.
Why Thermal Oil Instead of Steam
The appeal is high heat at low pressure. A thermal oil system reaches the temperatures cargo heating and fuel treatment need, often 150 to 300 degrees C, while the loop itself stays near atmospheric pressure. That means no high-pressure boiler to survey, no feed water to treat, and nothing to freeze or corrode when the plant is cold. Temperature control is precise and quick, which suits a chemical tanker holding a parcel to a tight heating specification. The tradeoff is that the heat-transfer oil is combustible and degrades in service, and both facts shape the safety case and the maintenance.
Fired, Exhaust-Gas, or Composite
Thermal oil is heated in one of two ways, and many ships carry both:
- Fired heater - burns oil or gas through a burner into a helical coil; the unit used in port and whenever the main engine is stopped.
- Exhaust-gas heater (economizer) - recovers heat from the main engine exhaust and does the same job for nothing while the ship is at sea.
- Composite installation - runs the exhaust-gas heater underway and the fired heater in port, the two sized to cover the whole operating profile.
The balance between them follows how the ship trades, long sea passages against heavy port time.
The Coil, the Fluid, and Safety
The helical coil is the heart of a fired heater and its main wear point. Local overheating, poor circulation, or a tired fluid bakes carbon onto the coil and creates hot spots that eventually crack it, so coil condition and flow are watched closely. The thermal oil itself ages through thermal cracking, which lowers its flash point and leaves carbon behind, so it is sampled and analysed rather than run to failure. Because the fluid burns, a coil leak is a fire risk, and the unit carries class approval on that basis. When a coil reaches the end of its life, it is renewed by a boiler retubing specialist, not patched in place.
Choosing a Supplier and Specifying the Unit
For a directory buyer, thermal oil boiler suppliers are judged on how well they size and support the unit. A few points decide the specification:
- Heat demand - sized to the real cargo-heating and fuel-treatment load in kW or kcal per hour, not a round catalogue figure.
- Heating type - fired, exhaust-gas, or composite, matched to how the ship trades.
- Coil and burner - coil material suited to the temperature and fluid, with the burner and fuel type specified.
- Class approval - type approval to the flag and society, given the fire risk of the heat-transfer oil.
- Maker match - compatible with the unit already aboard, with a parts channel behind it.
A worn coil, a tired burner, or a failing circulation pump can often be put right with replacement parts instead of a whole new heater.
