Vane pumps - a middle ground for moderate pressure and smoother, quieter flow.
Piston pumps - axial or radial, delivering the highest pressures, and available in variable-displacement forms that vary output to demand, which is why they run steering gear and heavy cranes.

Radial piston units of the Hagglunds type sit at the top of this range, driving the highest-torque deck applications where a gear pump would never cope.

Steering Gear and Class Approval

Steering gear pumps are a category of their own, because the steering gear is SOLAS-critical, with rules on redundancy and independent power. The variable-displacement piston pumps that drive it carry class type approval, and a replacement has to meet the same approval and match the steering gear maker's design rather than being a general-purpose equivalent. Where a pump is worn rather than failed, an overhaul through a hydraulic systems service is often the route instead of replacement, keeping the approved unit in service.
