Almost everything that pushes, pulls, or lifts on a ship runs on hydraulics, and the pump is what puts the power into the fluid. Steering gear, deck winches and cranes, windlasses, hatch covers, ramps, and stabilizers all draw on a hydraulic pump - usually part of a power unit with its reservoir, motor, and valves - to turn electrical power into the flow and pressure that move the load. What a Marine Hydraulic Pump Drives

The duty decides everything about the pump. Steering gear is the most critical, running continuously and demanding fine control and redundancy. Hatch covers, ramps, watertight doors, and stabilizers each draw on the same hydraulic power, sometimes from a dedicated unit and sometimes from a shared power pack. A marine hydraulic pump is rarely bought in isolation: it is specified as part of the system it serves, at the flow and pressure that system was designed around.

Gear, Vane, and Piston Pumps

Three pump types cover most shipboard hydraulics, and the choice comes down to matching the duty and the pressure the system runs at:

  • Gear pumps - simple, robust, and fixed-displacement, suited to the steady high-flow work of much deck machinery.
  • Vane pumps - a middle ground for moderate pressure and smoother, quieter flow.
  • Piston pumps - axial or radial, delivering the highest pressures, and available in variable-displacement forms that vary output to demand, which is why they run steering gear and heavy cranes.

Radial piston units of the Hagglunds type sit at the top of this range, driving the highest-torque deck applications where a gear pump would never cope.

Steering Gear and Class Approval

Steering gear pumps are a category of their own, because the steering gear is SOLAS-critical, with rules on redundancy and independent power. The variable-displacement piston pumps that drive it carry class type approval, and a replacement has to meet the same approval and match the steering gear maker's design rather than being a general-purpose equivalent. Where a pump is worn rather than failed, an overhaul through a hydraulic systems service is often the route instead of replacement, keeping the approved unit in service.

Choosing a Supplier

For a directory buyer, marine hydraulic pump suppliers differ by the makers they carry, whether they can supply the complete power unit or just the pump, and whether they hold the class approval a steering-gear duty needs.
