Stern Tube Bearing Suppliers
A propeller and the aft end of its shaft can rest tens of tonnes on a single bearing that no one looks at between dockings. Stern tube bearing and liner suppliers serve that hidden interface: the bushes the tailshaft turns in, and the hardened liner surfaces that protect the shaft where bearings and seals run. Because the parts are buried in the stern frame, almost every purchase is driven by a docking date - which makes dimensional certainty and lead time worth more than any discount.
Oil-Lubricated White Metal or Water-Lubricated Composite
Deep-sea tonnage overwhelmingly runs oil-lubricated stern tubes with white metal bearing bushes - a tin-based alloy cast into a steel shell, forgiving of brief lubrication upsets and easy to re-metal when worn. The alternative family is water-lubricated: polymer and composite bushes from makers such as Thordon and Tenmat that run on seawater, remove the oil-to-sea interface entirely, and have gained ground as environmental rules tightened around stern tube oil. Rubber cutless bearings serve the same duty on workboats and smaller craft. The choice is made at design or conversion, not at the spares desk: each regime brings its own clearance rules, cooling arrangement, and survey expectations, and the switch from oil to water lubrication is a classed modification rather than a substitution.
Shaft Liners: The Sacrificial Surface
The liner is the part built to be consumed. A chrome steel sleeve, typically shrink-fitted over the shaft, gives the lip seals a hard, true surface to run on - and over the years the lips cut grooves into it. Once a groove passes the point where a seal can bed, the choices are a new liner, machining the existing one, or shifting the seal to an unworn track. A supplier quoting a liner needs the shaft drawing and the measured diameters, because liners are matched to the individual shaft, not picked from a shelf. Consumables around this interface - bushes, liner sleeves, and gauge parts - flow through stern tube bearing spare parts suppliers once the vessel is in service.
Makers and Sourcing Channels
Two supply ecosystems meet at the stern tube. The seal and liner side concentrates around the seal makers - SKF, Wartsila, Kemel, JMT, and Lagersmit - whose liners and running surfaces are engineered to their own seal designs. The bearing side splits between OEM bushes, water-lubricated specialists such as Duramax, Thordon, and Tenmat, and machine shops that cast and machine white metal bushes to drawing. Bushes are commonly delivered semi-finished with a machining allowance in the bore, final-sized only after the stern tube is measured. Whatever the channel, material certification to EN 10204 3.1 travels with the part, and class expects to see it before a bush goes into a surveyed shaft line.
Buying Checklist Before the Docking
- Shaft drawing and measured sizes - nominal diameters are not enough; the quote should rest on the drawing plus actual micrometer readings from the last survey.
- Material certificates - EN 10204 3.1 on bush and liner material, matched to what the class society approved for that shaft line.
- Machining allowance stated - confirm whether the bush arrives finished or semi-finished, and who does the final boring.
- Lead time against the dock window - a cast and machined bush has a production time that a docking postponement absorbs better than a docking advance.
- Used and reconditioned options - bushes and liners recovered from recycled tonnage suit older vessels where OEM production has stopped; provenance and measurement records decide whether class will accept them.
Fitting, final boring, and the wear-down verification that follows belong with stern tube bearing service companies, and the cleanest dockings book the parts and the workmanship together.
Send the shaft drawing, the bearing material, and the docking dates in the opening inquiry. The vendors below can be sorted by brand, country, supplier specification, and IACS class approvals - and stern tube bearing and liner suppliers quote with confidence when the measurements arrive before the deadline pressure does.
