Stern Tube Bearing Spare Parts Suppliers
Stern tube wear announces itself in millimetres: a poker gauge reading creeping toward the class limit, oil analysis picking up bearing metal, a seal weeping because the liner under its lip has grooved. Stern tube bearing spare parts suppliers cover the hardware behind those symptoms - bearing bushes, liner sleeves, and the measurement tooling - and the ordering usually happens on a survey clock, with a dock booked and a shaft withdrawal on the work list.
What Wears, and How It Shows
The aft bush takes the propeller's weight plus the bending the propeller puts into the shaft, so it wears faster than the forward one and always at the bottom first. On the shaft itself, the sealed running surfaces erode in a different way: each lip seal slowly machines a groove into the liner at its own track. The two wear processes meet in the survey file - wear-down readings for the bush, leakage and groove depth for the liner - and each has its own line on the spares order when the numbers run out of margin.
The Parts List Behind a Shaft Withdrawal
A withdrawal scope typically gathers the aft and forward bearing bushes in white metal or composite, a liner sleeve if the grooving is past saving, and the small hardware around them - end fittings, jointing, and gauge parts for the wear-down measurements that will be taken at every future survey. Bushes normally ship semi-finished, with bore allowance left for final machining after the stern tube is measured in the dock. The monitoring hardware belongs on the same order: aft bearing temperature sensors, their compensating cables and pockets, and oil sampling fittings, because a failed sensor quietly voids the condition monitoring arrangement the vessel's survey scheme may depend on. Two adjacent items live in their own catalogues rather than on this list: stern tube seals, and the distance and spacer rings used to move a seal onto a fresh liner track.
Clearances, Oversizes, and the Data That Sizes the Order
Every stern tube carries a dimensional history, and the order has to match the history rather than the newbuild drawing. As-fitted clearances for a white metal bush are set in tenths of a millimetre and scale with shaft diameter; composite and rubber designs run larger cold clearances by design, so a quote for a composite replacement against white metal numbers is wrong before it ships. Stern tubes that have been rebored after damage run oversize bores that no standard bush fits - which is the single most common reason a "correct" part fails to enter the tube. The data set that prevents all of it fits on one page: the shaft drawing, the as-fitted clearance record from the last withdrawal, the latest wear-down readings, and the bore measurements if any reboring is on record. A vendor who asks for that page before quoting is doing the buyer a favour; one who quotes from the vessel type and year is guessing.
New, Machined-to-Size, or From Recycled Tonnage
Three channels answer the same inquiry. OEM parts follow the original equipment route and suit vessels still inside the maker's support window. Bearing shops cast and machine bushes to the shaft drawing - often the only route for older or converted shaft lines - and re-metalling an existing shell, where the worn white metal is melted out and recast, sits with stern tube bearing service companies rather than the parts trade. The third channel is recovery from recycled tonnage, where a bush or liner from a scrapped sister ship carries a price advantage that only survives if its measurement records and provenance satisfy the attending surveyor. Material certification to EN 10204 3.1 is the common thread all three channels must produce.
Material Matters: White Metal Grades and Composite Equivalents
Not all white metal is the same metal. Tin-based grades dominate stern tube duty for their conformability and corrosion behaviour, and the grade the shell was originally cast with is recorded in the shaft line documentation - a replacement or re-metalled bush is expected to match it, not merely to be "babbitt". On the composite side, each maker's material is its own approval case: a polymer bush is supplied against the maker's class type approval, with water quality, groove pattern, and cold clearance specified by the manufacturer rather than by a generic standard. This is why substitutions between materials, or even between makers within the same material family, restart the class conversation. For the buyer the practical rule is short: the spares order names the material and grade from the documentation, and any proposed equivalent arrives with its approval papers attached, before the dock date depends on it.
Ordering Without a Surprise in the Dock
The inquiries that go wrong go wrong dimensionally. Quote requests built on nominal sizes meet a stern tube that has been bored oversize at some forgotten repair, and the mismatch surfaces with the vessel already on blocks. The safe sequence is drawing plus measured diameters first, machining allowance agreed second, delivery date checked against the dock window third. Where wear or damage has consumed the full set - bush, liner, and fittings together - the purchase effectively becomes new equipment, and stern tube bearing suppliers take the inquiry from there.
The vendors below can be filtered by brand, country, verification, and supplier specification, including OEM and used spare parts channels. Stern tube bearing spare parts suppliers respond fastest to an inquiry that reads like a survey report: measured sizes, material, class society, and the date the dock opens.
