Gyro vs Magnetic: What Sets Them Apart

Both compass types point the ship in the right direction, but they work on different principles.

A magnetic compass uses Earth's magnetic field to align its card with magnetic north. It needs no power and no electronics. SOLAS still requires one on every vessel, even when modern electronic gear is fitted.

A gyro compass points to true north using a spinning rotor that resists the Earth's rotation. It feeds heading data directly into autopilots, radar, ECDIS, and steering systems. It needs a steady power supply and warm-up time, but its accuracy is higher, usually within 0.1 to 0.75 degrees.
