Navigation Lights Suppliers
COLREG Annex I fixes the geometry before any catalogue is opened: a masthead light shows over 225 degrees of horizon, each sidelight over 112.5 degrees, a sternlight over 135 degrees, and on a vessel of 50 metres or more the masthead light must be visible at 6 nautical miles. Marine navigation lights suppliers trade inside that fixed frame - what differs between them is fixture build quality, approval paperwork, and how quickly a replacement for a specific series reaches the vessel.
The buying scope covers complete fixtures in single and duplex versions, navigation light control panels that monitor each circuit and alarm on lamp failure, mounting brackets and screening boards, and the signal lights - not-under-command, restricted-in-ability-to-manoeuvre, towing - that share the same approval regime.
What COLREG Annex I Means for the Fixture
Annex I is unusually specific for an international instrument: it prescribes the chromaticity coordinates of the red, green, and white sectors, the luminous intensity formula behind the visibility ranges of Rule 22, and the precision of the sector cutoffs at the boundaries. A sidelight that bleeds green light aft of the 112.5 degree cutoff is non-compliant even if the lamp burns perfectly. This is why fixtures are sold and approved as complete units - housing, lens, and light source together - and why the mounting position and screening arrangements drawn at the design stage matter as much as the hardware itself.
LED or Incandescent: What Changes at the Fixture Level
LED navigation lights have taken over newbuild specifications on lifetime and power draw, with service lives quoted in tens of thousands of hours against roughly a thousand for a filament lamp. The catch sits at the panel: older navigation light control panels detect lamp failure by sensing filament current, and an LED unit drawing a fraction of that current can either trigger a permanent false alarm or defeat the monitoring entirely. A fleet moving to LED buys fixtures and panel compatibility together, or fits interface units in between. On existing tonnage, the incandescent installed base remains large, which keeps demand alive for both fixture types and for the duplex versions that switch to a second lamp when the first fails.
Brands and Type Approval
The commercial installed base concentrates around a familiar set of makers: Aqua Signal (the Series 55 is close to a default on cargo tonnage), DHR, Peters+Bey, and Tranberg, with Lopolight prominent in LED fixtures and Perko and Hella Marine common on workboats and smaller craft. Approval is the second half of the purchase: EU-flagged vessels need the MED wheelmark on the fixture, other flags accept equivalent type approvals, and classification societies expect the certificate to travel with the delivery. A fixture without its approval certificate is deck cargo, not navigation equipment.
What to Look For in a Supplier
- Series-level matching - the vendor identifies the exact housing from a data plate photo, so the replacement lands on the existing bracket and cable gland without rework.
- Approval documents with the delivery - wheelmark or type approval certificates supplied as standard, matched to the flag's requirements.
- Voltage coverage - both 24V DC and 115/230V AC variants in stock, because the same fixture series ships in several electrical versions.
- Panel compatibility advice - a vendor who asks which control panel is fitted before quoting an LED fixture is saving the buyer a second purchase.
- Long-term consumables path - lenses, gaskets, and lamps for the series remain available for years; the running-cost side of ownership sits with navigation lights spare parts suppliers, and a fixture choice made without that channel in mind gets expensive later.
Fitting is its own discipline. On-board installation, cabling, sector screening, and the function tests a surveyor wants documented belong to navigation lights service providers rather than the equipment sale, and coordinating the two in one port call shortens the whole job.
A fixture inquiry that names the series, light type, and voltage gets a same-day quotation; one that says only "sidelight" starts a question chain. Compare the vendors below by brand coverage, country, verification status, and IACS class approvals - with the data plate details in hand, marine navigation lights suppliers can match the exact housing already on the bracket.
