Stern Tube Seal Service Companies
There are three ways to put a leaking stern tube seal right, and they differ by an order of magnitude in cost and downtime: renew the lip rings with the shaft in place, overhaul the sealing arrangement in dock, or rebuild the running surface the seal has destroyed beneath it. Stern tube seal repair is therefore less a single service than a triage decision, and the companies that do it well earn their fee at the diagnosis stage - before a single ring is cut.
Reading the Failure Before Opening Anything
The seal announces its problem in the direction of the leak. Oil consumption trending upward means the aft lip rings are passing oil outward to sea - a compliance problem as much as a technical one. Water appearing in the system means the sea is winning instead, and the chloride content of the sample settles whether it is seawater or something tamer. The cause behind either symptom matters more than the symptom itself: rubber hardened by heat ages the whole ring set at once, a grooved running track chews through new rings as fast as old ones, and a length of fishing line or mooring rope melted into the seal area - the classic unexplained failure on coastal traders - damages lips that were otherwise years from retirement. A workshop that asks for the consumption log, the last oil analysis, and a note on recent fouling before quoting has already started the repair.
Renewal With the Shaft in Place: Bonded Rings and the Emergency Seal
Most lip ring renewals never see a drydock. Split replacement rings are fitted around the shaft and bonded - vulcanized back into an endless ring in situ - which turns a shaft-withdrawal job into an attendance measured in shifts. The sea is held back meanwhile by the arrangement most systems already carry: an inflatable or static emergency sealing ring that closes against the shaft while the vessel lies stopped. Access to the aft seal decides the logistics - trimming the stern up brings some installations above the waterline, and where it cannot, divers set a habitat over the seal so technicians work dry below the surface. The quality variable in all of it is the bond itself: a vulcanized joint made well is as good as a moulded ring, one made badly is a repeat attendance, which is why maker training certificates for the bonding technicians are worth asking about by name.
When the Track Is Worn, Rings Are Not Enough
Lip seals cut grooves into the chrome liner they run on, and once a groove is deep enough, new rubber fails on it in months. Two escapes exist short of liner renewal. A distance or spacer ring between stern tube and seal housing shifts the entire seal onto an unworn track - a catalogue part with its own supplier category - and buys years for the price of a docking's access. When the track is beyond shifting, the cure moves to the liner itself, and that is machining and sleeving territory that belongs to stern tube bearing services rather than to the seal trade. The distinction is worth money: a seal workshop that keeps selling ring sets onto a dying track is treating the invoice, not the leak.
Air Seal Conversions and the Zero-Discharge Argument
Air-type sealing systems change the physics of the problem. A controlled air chamber sits between the oil side and the sea, held at a pressure tracking the draught, and whatever passes the lips - oil or water - drains to a collection tank on board instead of overboard. The design attraction was always reliability at varying draughts; the commercial attraction arrived with environmental regimes that price every sheen at the waterline, and conversion packages from the major seal makers have become a standard refit item for tonnage trading to regulated waters. The service side follows: an air seal brings a control unit, an air supply, and alarm settings into the maintenance scope, and the conversion attendance should end with the crew trained on all three, not just with new hardware in the stern.
Proving the Repair Before the Ship Sails
A finished seal job is demonstrated, not declared. The closed-up system takes a pressure or vacuum test to the maker's figures, the header tank level and any air seal parameters are watched through trials, and the consumption log carries the burden of proof for the following weeks - the same daily number that first reported the failure now confirms the repair. The attendance report that captures test values, ring batch references, and as-found photographs is what turns the job into evidence at the next survey, and stern tube seal repair without that paper trail is half-finished regardless of how dry the tube is.
Booking Signals That Separate Workshops
- Brand authority for the fitted seal - authorization or documented specialist standing for the maker in the stern: SKF Simplex-Compact, Wartsila, Kemel, Kobelco, Lagersmit, and JMT types dominate the installed base, and type designations such as MK2, CX, and SC2 should be familiar vocabulary, not research items.
- Certified bonding technicians - named training certificates for the in-situ vulcanizing that shaft-in-place renewal depends on.
- Afloat capability as a package - trim calculations, diver and habitat coordination, and the emergency seal procedure handled by one contractor rather than assembled ad hoc.
- Ring set provenance - genuine or maker-approved ring sets with certificates; the consumable side of the trade runs through stern tube seal spare parts suppliers, and the fitting workshop should document exactly which parts went in.
- Guarantee tied to the consumption log - written terms that define success the way the vessel measures it: a flat trend line, not a handshake at the gangway.
Send the seal maker and type designation, the shaft diameter, the oil loss or water ingress trend, and the next port with a workable stay - that message lets a workshop arrive with the right ring sets and the habitat question already answered. Brand specialist coverage, service area, riding teams, guarantee terms, and IACS class approvals are all visible on the provider profiles below, and matching them against the seal actually fitted is how stern tube seal repair gets booked once instead of twice.
