Laser Cladding Service Providers
A worn crankshaft journal, a scored hydraulic ram, a pump shaft undersize at the seal - each used to mean a new part and a long wait for delivery. Laser cladding rebuilds the surface instead. A focused laser melts a thin skin of the base metal while alloy powder is fed into the pool, and the two fuse into a new layer that is bonded to the parent metal, not merely stuck to it. The heat input stays low and local, so the part barely distorts and the properties underneath survive. Laser cladding services turn that process into a repair route for the marine components that are expensive to replace and slow to source.
How Laser Cladding Differs From the Alternatives
The value sits in the bond and the heat. Thermal spray lays metal on mechanically, which can spall off a surface that carries load or takes impact. Weld overlay bonds properly but pours in far more heat, which distorts thin sections and enlarges the heat-affected zone. Hard chrome plating builds only thin layers and relies on hexavalent chromium, which REACH and other regimes are steadily restricting. Laser cladding sits between them: a true metallurgical bond like welding, but with a fraction of the heat and dilution, laid in controlled layers from tenths of a millimetre upward. For a load-bearing marine surface that has to hold under fatigue and corrosion, that combination is what makes the repair last.
What Gets Clad on a Ship
The work follows wear. Rotating shaft surfaces are the staple - propeller and intermediate shafts, pump and motor shafts, and the journals on a crankshaft and camshaft that have gone undersize or scored. Hydraulic cylinder rods and rams come back to size with a corrosion-resistant layer that outlasts the original chrome. Valve seats and spindles take hard alloys such as Stellite for wear and high-temperature service, and exhaust valve components are a routine case. Beyond straight repair, laser cladding for marine engine parts also puts a wear- or corrosion-resistant surface onto new components before they ever enter service, which is why the method shows up in both the repair shop and the overhaul spec.
Restore to Size, Then Machine
Cladding is deposited slightly oversize on purpose. The component then goes back to a lathe or grinder to bring the surface to final dimension, roundness, and finish, so the alignment and clearances end up exactly on drawing. That pairing with on-site machining and line boring is part of the job, not an afterthought, and a capable provider quotes the cladding and the finishing together. Smaller parts are handled in a workshop; large shafts and housings that cannot travel may be clad and machined in place, which changes the mobilization but not the metallurgy.
The Metallurgy and the Paperwork
The result is only as good as the powder choice and the process control behind it. The alloy has to match both the base metal and the service - hardness where the surface wears, the right chemistry where it corrodes, and a dilution low enough that the top layer keeps the properties it was chosen for. On class-relevant components the deliverable includes the powder's material certificate, hardness and metallurgical checks, and a dimensional report against drawing, with class acceptance where the part is load-bearing or survey-critical. A provider that talks through powder selection and testing before quoting is applying the discipline the repair actually needs.
Describe the component, its base material, the worn and target dimensions, and the service it sees, and a provider can judge whether cladding is the right route and quote the finishing with it. Service area, workshop and on-site capability, verification, and class approvals sort the field below, and laser cladding services engaged on the right component return a part to service that often outlasts the original surface it replaced.
