LNG and LPG Workshops
A gas carrier is the one vessel type a repair yard cannot improvise for. Before the ship touches the blocks, its cargo system has been warmed, gas-freed, and inerted on a schedule agreed weeks ahead; once it is in dock, every job around the cargo plant demands people who know what a cryogenic system forgives and what it does not. The LNG and LPG workshop is the yard's claim to that competence, and a gas carrier repair yard is selected on the substance behind the claim.
Before the Dock: The Gas-Free Interface
The docking of gas tonnage begins with atmosphere management, and the yard is a participant, not a spectator. Warming up, liquid freeing, inerting, and aerating the cargo system take days and consume nitrogen in volumes only a prepared facility supplies; the certificates that declare tanks safe for entry and hot work set the legal ground for everything that follows. A yard experienced with gas carriers quotes this phase with dates and nitrogen capacity in the text - and a yard that leaves it out of the quotation entirely has answered the selection question early.
Inside the Workshop: Valves, Pumps, Compressors
The workshop's bench work concentrates where cryogenic service punishes ordinary overhaul habits. Cargo valves come ashore for seat work and testing with materials and clearances chosen for service far below zero, and are proven tight at temperatures the test bench must be able to reach - a cryogenic valve passed at ambient is an assumption, not a result. Cargo and spray pumps, cargo compressors, and heat exchangers of the reliquefaction and vaporizer plant follow the same logic: maker-correct clearances, records against test figures, and assembly clean enough for oxygen-adjacent and low-temperature duty. Membrane and containment work stands apart - repairs inside the tanks of membrane ships run under the containment designer's own regime with certified contractors - and the yard's role is knowing that boundary and staging access for those who hold the certification.
Piping in the Cold
Cryogenic piping rewards a dedicated bench. Stainless spools for cargo and spray lines are fabricated with the cleanliness and weld quality low temperature demands, tested accordingly, and insulated in systems where a vapour leak becomes an ice diagnosis weeks later. Yards route this through their pipe fabrication capability, and on gas tonnage the pipe workshop is effectively an extension of the gas plant scope - worth assessing as one capability rather than two.
Docked Scope or Sailing Scope
Gas carrier repair splits naturally into what needs the dock and what does not, and much of the plant's maintenance never needs a dock at all. Instrumentation, custody transfer systems, compressor overhauls, and troubleshooting travel with the vessel through LNG and LPG systems services, between voyages and without the gas-freeing overhead. The docking earns the jobs that need an open, inerted, gas-free system and external access - which is exactly why the two scopes should be planned together: the same gas-free window that the dock requires is the cheapest access the plant's other work will ever get.
Selecting the Yard
- Gas carrier references, recent and typed - LNG and LPG are different plants; references should match the vessel's own type and containment.
- Nitrogen and atmosphere capacity stated - volumes and delivery rate for inerting and drying, in the quotation, with the schedule they support.
- Cryogenic test capability - valve and component testing at service-representative temperature, documented.
- Containment boundary declared - which tank-internal work the yard performs, which runs under certified specialist contractors, and how the yard stages both.
- Vetting-grade paperwork - gas carriers live under terminal and charterer scrutiny, and the docking file the yard produces should read accordingly.
