Disposal Services
A docking produces waste on an industrial scale: slops and sludge pumped ashore before hot work, hundreds of tonnes of spent blasting grit, oily bilge water, garbage, and - on older tonnage - materials that need a licensed chain of custody rather than a skip. Disposal services at a repair yard are the facility side of that stream, and they belong in the yard selection questions because a docking whose waste has nowhere legal to go stops exactly as hard as one waiting for steel.
The Streams a Docking Generates
The list is predictable and each line has its own rules. Oily residues - sludge from fuel and lube systems, slops from tank washing, bilge water - go to reception with quantities logged for the vessel's oil record book. Blasting grit arrives in bulk once hull treatment starts, contaminated with old coating, and its classification decides its route. General garbage follows the garbage management plan into the yard's segregated reception. And the hazardous tail - asbestos discovered in gaskets and insulation, ozone-depleting refrigerants, batteries, sludge with heavy metals - moves only through licensed handlers with certificates at every step. On vessels carrying an Inventory of Hazardous Materials, the disposal story starts earlier still, with the survey work under hazardous materials survey and inventory providers telling the yard what the ship contains before anyone cuts into it.
Certificates Are the Product
Waste leaves the ship in hours; the paperwork follows the vessel for years. Reception certificates with quantities and waste types feed the oil record book and garbage record book, where port state officers read them long after the docking; hazardous streams add consignment notes through to final treatment. The practical test of a yard's disposal service is whether it issues this paper unprompted, in the formats the record books need, with the yard's own licence references attached. A facility that receives waste but documents it casually has transferred the risk, not the waste.
MARPOL Logic in a Yard Setting
The same reception obligations that MARPOL builds around ports apply with extra force in a repair yard, where the vessel cannot simply sail on to a better-equipped harbour. Sludge burned in the ship's own incinerator at sea must now be landed; tank washings that would be processed underway need reception the moment cleaning gangs start; and the segregation the regulations assume - oily, garbage by category, hazardous - has to exist physically on the yard's quay. Vessels planning the docking do well to arrive with tanks as empty as the voyage allows, because tank cleaning operations in the yard multiply the volumes precisely when disposal capacity is most contested. During ordinary trading the same streams land voyage by voyage through waste disposal port agents; a docking compresses a year of that into weeks and adds what no port call produces - grit by the hundred tonnes, opened systems, hazmat surfacing mid-repair - and absorbing it is what the yard's own reception is for.
Asking the Right Questions
- Licensed streams listed - which waste categories the yard receives under its own licences, and which travel to third parties under whose responsibility.
- Certificate formats shown - sample reception documents that map onto oil record book and garbage record book entries without translation.
- Grit logistics included - blasting waste removal priced inside the hull treatment quotation, with its classification route stated.
- Hazmat chain of custody - named licensed handlers for asbestos, refrigerants, and contaminated residues, with consignment documentation through to destruction.
- Capacity against the schedule - reception volumes per day matched to the cleaning and blasting plan, so waste never becomes the critical path.
Declare the expected volumes early - sludge and slop quantities, tank states, known hazmat - and let the yard confirm reception in writing before arrival. Dock parameters, wharf length, location, and verification status distinguish the yards below, and disposal services bought as a planned stream, with certificates arriving as reliably as invoices, are one docking risk fully retired.
