Mechanical Workshops
Every docking carries a second, quieter queue behind the dock schedule: the queue at the yard's machine tools. Pumps stripped on day two wait for their shafts to be skimmed, valves wait for seats to be machined, a scored rudder pintle waits its turn on a lathe big enough to take it. The mechanical workshop is where that queue forms and clears, and a repair yard's real capacity for machinery work is read from its machine park and bench space, not from its brochure adjectives.
The Machine Park in Numbers
A marine machine shop describes itself in dimensions. Lathe capacity - swing and distance between centres - decides whether the yard turns a two-metre pump shaft or an eleven-metre tailshaft; the presence of a horizontal boring mill decides whether large housings and couplings are machined in-house or travel; vertical lathes, slotters, and honing gear each unlock their own family of jobs. The buyer's translation is direct: list the largest rotating components in the docking specification, ask the yard for the machines those parts would meet, and treat a vague answer as a subcontract with extra steps. Shaft machining sits at the centre of this arithmetic on most dockings - propeller shaft journals, coupling faces, rudder stocks and pintles - and the yards that own the length and swing for it keep the critical path indoors.
Bench Work: Pumps, Valves, Coolers
Around the machines runs the bench economy of a docking. Pump overhaul is its staple - casings split, wear rings renewed, shafts trued, mechanical seals replaced, and the assembled unit proven on a test rig rather than returned on faith. Valve overhaul runs in parallel at volume: seats machined or lapped, spindles straightened, and every safety and relief valve set and sealed against its certificate. Heat exchanger work joins the flow where the docking scope pulls coolers ashore. The differentiating question is not whether a yard's workshop does these jobs but how many at once, because a docking delivers them in a wave, and a shop with eight benches clears in days what a shop with two spreads across the whole docking.
Test Rigs: Where the Workshop Proves Its Work
The bench is only half the overhaul; the rig is the other half. Hydrostatic test stands for valves and coolers, pump test loops that demonstrate head and flow against the curve, and calibrated gauges with current certificates separate a workshop from a repair bench with good lighting. For the superintendent the practical significance is documentary: components returned with test records close survey items and satisfy the office, while components returned with verbal assurance reopen the same conversation at the next port. Asking to see the test facilities during the yard visit costs ten minutes and answers most quality questions in advance.
The Boundaries: What Belongs Next Door
A yard's mechanical workshop lives inside an ecosystem of specialised neighbours, and knowing the boundaries prevents mis-addressed inquiries. Rotors and impellers that leave the shop rebuilt still need dynamic balancing in the balancing facility; governors, turbochargers, and high-pressure fuel equipment run in their own dedicated workshops with their own test stands; main and auxiliary engine overhauls are an engines-and-machinery scope that draws on the machine shop rather than living in it. And when the component cannot come to the machines at all - a coupling flange on an installed shaft, a seating face in the engine room - the work inverts into on-site machining services, where the tool travels to the ship inside the same yard.
Docking Scope or Voyage Repair
Machinery overhaul does not always wait for a dock, and routing the job correctly is worth real money. Components accessible with the vessel afloat - most pumps among them - can be overhauled alongside or shipped ashore during ordinary port stays through pump service companies, keeping the docking specification lean for the work that actually needs the dock. The mechanical workshop earns its place in the docking for the opposite category: everything connected to the shaft line, everything too large to travel, and the overhaul wave that only a yard's bench count can absorb in the window available. The planning consequence is worth stating plainly - workshop slots fill like dock slots, and a machinery list sent with the docking inquiry books both at once, while a list produced after arrival joins the queue behind every vessel that sent theirs earlier.
Questions That Sort the Yards
- Machine capacities as numbers - maximum swing, length between centres, and boring capacity, checked against the largest components in the specification.
- Bench throughput - how many simultaneous pump and valve overhauls the shop staffs, with a recent docking as evidence.
- Test facilities with certificates - hydrostatic and running test rigs, calibrated within date, and test records issued as standard.
- Workshop priority policy - how machine time splits between the dock's emergencies and the shop's queue when both surge at once.
- Boundary honesty - which adjacent jobs the yard subcontracts and to whom, declared before the docking rather than discovered inside it.
Put the machinery list into the inquiry next to the steel and coating scope, with the largest shafts and casings dimensioned. The yards below compare by dock type and size, wharf length, location, and verification - and a mechanical workshop that answers with machine capacities and bench counts is quoting from its floor, not its imagination.
