Underwater Stern Tube Service Companies
The stern tube is the one part of the propulsion train a ship cannot inspect from inboard and cannot reach without either a dock or a diver. When the aft seal starts weeping, when a wire wraps the shaft, or when the tailshaft survey falls due and the vessel has no docking window, the question is the same: how much of this can be done in the water. The answer is more than most operators assume, and considerably less than a diving contractor's brochure implies. This page lists the teams that do the in-water half of the work.
What Divers Can Do at the Stern Tube Without a Dock
The in-water scope is defined by one constraint: the shaft stays where it is. Within that, a diving team can clear rope and net from the shaft and boss, remove and refit the rope guard, inspect the aft seal and the sealing surface for damage, look for oil emission and estimate its rate, take wear-down readings where the arrangement allows access, fit a temporary or emergency seal, and install a dam so the seal assembly can be changed from inboard with the vessel afloat.
What it cannot do is anything requiring the shaft to come out. Bearing clearance beyond what a wear-down reading shows, re-metalling, liner renewal, alignment work and seal track machining all need a withdrawal, and a contractor who suggests otherwise is either describing a different job or overselling. Establishing which side of that line the vessel's problem falls on is the first purpose of the attendance, and often the only one needed.
Rope and Net Clearance and the Rope Guard
Rope round the shaft is the most common reason this page gets opened. Polypropylene line and net wind tight against the boss, melt under friction, and work forward toward the seal. Cut early, it is a routine dive. Left through a passage, it becomes a seal failure.
Clearance means cutting the wrap away in layers with hydraulic tooling and hand cutters, then removing the rope guard to reach what has gone behind it. That is the part worth specifying: the rope guard propeller arrangement differs by design, some come off in halves with the shaft in place, some do not, and a quote written without knowing which will change on the day. Refitting matters as much as removal, because a rope guard left loose or misaligned collects the next wrap faster than the first. Where line has already reached the seal lips, clearance becomes a seal job and should be re-quoted rather than absorbed.
Diagnosing a Stern Tube Seal Leak in the Water
An oil sheen astern, a falling header tank, or water in the stern tube oil all point to the same area and none of them says which seal ring has gone. A diver establishes what the inboard evidence cannot: whether emission is continuous or intermittent, whether it changes with shaft rotation, whether the sealing surface is scored or corroded, and whether anything is trapped between the lips. Rotation matters more than operators expect. A seal that weeps only under way is telling a different story from one that weeps at rest, and the distinction usually decides whether the vessel can complete the voyage on monitoring or needs intervention in the next port.
The reading is more useful when paired with the oil side of the picture, since analysis of the stern tube oil dates the ingress and often names the mechanism before anyone gets wet; the products and their approvals sit with stern tube oil suppliers. Together the two decide whether the vessel sails on a monitored condition, takes a temporary seal, or books a docking.
Temporary Seals and Dams Fitted Afloat
Two different interventions get called the same thing. A temporary or emergency seal is fitted around the shaft to stop or slow emission so the vessel can complete a voyage under an agreed condition. A dam is fitted for the opposite reason: to hold the water back while a seal assembly is changed from inboard with the ship still afloat, which is what turns a docking into a berth-side repair. The two are priced differently and carry different risk, and an enquiry that asks for a temporary seal when it means a dam will get a quotation that solves the wrong problem.
The diver's part is the fitting and the seal integrity check; the assembly itself, the split rings and the track condition belong to the shop team, and that scope runs through stern tube seal service companies. A useful enquiry names the seal maker and type, because what can be fitted afloat depends entirely on the design, and half the answers to that question are settled before anyone quotes.
Wear-Down Readings and the Tailshaft Survey
Tailshaft survey intervals are set by class and the reading that matters most is bearing wear-down. Traditionally it is taken in dock. On arrangements where the aft seal housing or the rope guard gives access, a diver can take it afloat, and where the society accepts that reading the survey can extend without a docking. The reading itself is quick; establishing that it will be accepted is not, and that part happens on paper weeks earlier. Where the society will not accept an in-water reading for the vessel in question, the dive still has value as a condition check ahead of the docking, but it should not be sold as a survey.
This only works when arranged in advance. The society has to accept the method and the contractor, the scope has to be agreed, and the reading has to be recorded in a form the surveyor will credit - which in practice means the same evidence discipline as any other in-water survey, and is usually booked as part of an underwater inspection rather than as a standalone dive.
Where the In-Water Scope Ends
Three findings end the diving attendance and start something else. A scored or corroded seal track cannot be repaired around; it needs machining or a liner, and that is shop work. Wear-down beyond the society's limit means the bearing comes out. Shaft damage, whether from a wrap that ran hot or from a strike, is assessed in the water and repaired ashore. None of the three is a judgement a diver should make alone; all three are findings that go to the superintendent with measurements attached, and in each case the useful output of the dive is a number rather than an opinion: emission rate, wear-down figure, depth and extent of the score. A finding described in adjectives cannot be quoted against.
Where the bearing is the issue, the work moves to stern tube bearing service providers, and the parts side runs through separate supplier channels again. The diver's measurement file is what those quotations are built on, which is why it is worth paying for a properly documented attendance even when the answer turns out to be a docking.
What to Establish Before the Attendance
- Seal maker and type, and the rope guard arrangement, because both decide what is possible with the shaft in place.
- Whether the scope is diagnosis, clearance, a temporary seal, or a dam for an inboard change - these are four different jobs and four different prices.
- Shaft immobilisation confirmed and the procedure agreed before any diver enters the water.
- Class involvement: whether a wear-down reading is intended to support a survey, and whether the society has accepted the contractor and the method.
- Evidence expected - video of the seal area, oil emission rate, wear-down figure, rope guard condition - and in what format.
- The extended branch priced in advance: what happens if the wrap has reached the lips, or the track proves scored.
- Coordination with the shop team where an inboard seal change is planned, since the dam and the change have to be sequenced on the same tide.
- Whether the contractor has actually fitted a dam before, and on which seal designs - this is the part of the scope where experience is thinnest across the market.
Underwater Stern Tube Service by Country
This is the narrowest specialism in the in-water trade and coverage is thin: a port with two dozen hull cleaning teams may have one contractor who has actually fitted a dam. Where a seal is weeping and a docking is months away, availability in the next port usually decides the plan more than anything technical.
