Underwater Propeller Polishing Services
A propeller is the smallest fouled surface on a ship and the most expensive one to neglect. It works in the highest-velocity water the hull sees, so roughness there costs disproportionately more than the same roughness on the flat bottom, and unlike the hull it carries no antifouling that can be relied on for a full docking cycle. Underwater propeller polishing restores the blade finish while the ship stays afloat, at anchor or alongside, and it is the one piece of in-water maintenance that pays back inside a single voyage on most trades. It is also rarely bought alone: the diving spread that polishes a propeller is already in the water and already paid for, so the attendance is normally priced as one line inside a larger visit.
What Underwater Propeller Polishing Involves
The work is done by commercial divers with hydraulically or pneumatically driven rotary tools, working blade by blade from the root outwards on both pressure and suction faces. Discs and pads run through descending grades: a coarse pass to remove calcareous growth and oxide, then progressively finer abrasives to bring the surface back towards the finish the blade left the foundry with. The leading edge and the outer third of the blade take priority, because that is where relative water velocity is highest and where roughness does the most damage.
Scope beyond the blades matters. The boss cap, the fillet radius where blade meets hub, and the rope guard collect growth that the blade pass does not reach, and a quote that covers only blade faces will leave them. Wrapped rope and net behind the boss is a separate removal job that has to be scoped before the dive rather than discovered during it, and where line has worked its way into the seal area it stops being a propeller question and becomes a stern tube one. Divers normally record the work on helmet or hull-mounted video, blade by blade, before and after, which is what turns the attendance into a document rather than an invoice.
Propeller Cleaning Against Propeller Polishing
The two words are used interchangeably in enquiries and mean different jobs. Underwater propeller cleaning removes what has settled - slime, weed, barnacles, calcareous deposit - and returns the blade to its existing surface condition. Polishing goes further and works the metal itself, removing oxide film, light pitting shoulders and the roughness left by previous cleaning, to restore a finish measurably closer to new.
The distinction has a cost and a frequency consequence. Propeller cleaning is quick, cheap and can be repeated often, which suits vessels on short rotations calling frequently at the same port. Polishing takes longer, is quoted per blade area rather than per attendance, and is scheduled less often. A specification that says cleaning and expects polishing produces a dispute at the end of the dive; naming the intended finish, not the activity, avoids it.
Blade Roughness, Propulsive Efficiency and Fuel
Roughness on a blade adds frictional drag exactly where the water moves fastest relative to the surface, which is why a propeller represents a small fraction of the wetted area but a disproportionate share of the avoidable loss. As the surface degrades, the propeller absorbs more torque for the same thrust: the engine holds speed at higher fuel rate, or the vessel loses speed at constant power. Slip figures and shaft power against speed are the two numbers that show it first.
Savings claimed for polishing vary widely between sources because they depend on the starting condition, the blade area and the trade. The useful figure is not a published percentage but the vessel's own performance baseline: shaft power at a reference speed and draught, logged before and after the attendance. Operators running continuous performance monitoring can see the step change directly, and that measurement is what justifies the interval rather than a rule of thumb.
Blade Finish Grading and What to Specify
Blade finish is assessed against surface comparators - the Rubert gauge is the standard reference in this trade, with grades running from a new-manufacture finish through progressively rougher surfaces. ISO 484 covers the manufacturing tolerance and surface requirements a propeller is built to, and it is the reference point a polishing specification works back towards.
Two things belong in the order. First, the target grade, agreed before the dive and recorded before and after, since a report that says the propeller was polished without stating to what finish proves nothing. Second, a limit on material removal: an over-aggressive pass with coarse abrasive takes metal, and repeated over several campaigns it alters the blade section and the pitch distribution the propeller was designed with. A contractor who asks about previous polishing history before quoting is asking the right question.
When to Polish: Scheduling Against Performance and CII
There is no universal interval, and claims of a fixed one should be treated with suspicion. What governs it is sea temperature on the route, how much of the year the vessel spends stopped, and the local settlement season; a vessel idling in the tropics fouls its propeller in weeks, a liner on a cold-water rotation in months. IMO ship energy efficiency guidance treats propeller cleaning and polishing as a recognised measure within a SEEMP, without prescribing how often it should be done.
The practical trigger is performance data plus opportunity. Most operators book against a measured drop in performance or a diver's condition report, and time the attendance to a port stay long enough to complete it. The Carbon Intensity Indicator puts a reporting consequence on the timing. Blade roughness is one of the few variables an operator can still move once the reporting year has started, so a vessel heading for a worse band tends to get its propeller done before December rather than after. Pairing it with hull cleaning in a single attendance is the usual way that gets done, since the diving spread is chargeable once either way.
Where Polishing Stops and Repair Begins
Polishing addresses surface condition, not geometry. Cavitation erosion pitting on the suction face, a bent or curled tip after ice or debris contact, a cracked blade root, or a nick deep enough to act as a stress raiser are all outside its scope, and grinding them out changes the section rather than fixing the defect. A polishing diver who reports damage of that kind is doing the job correctly, and the work moves across to a repair scope covering straightening, cropping and controlled blade dressing under an agreed procedure.
The same attendance usually picks up one neighbouring check without extra mobilisation. Shaft and rope guard anodes are in plain view with the diver already at the boss, and their condition is worth recording even when the anodes are not the reason for the visit, because a wasted anode at the stern says something about the whole cathodic protection system that a hull inspection alone will not. Damage that needs geometry restored rather than surface cleaned belongs with underwater propeller repair, quoted against a procedure rather than per blade area.
Divers, Certification and the Record
Propeller polishing sits under the same commercial diving framework as the rest of in-water work: the ADCI Consensus Standards across the Americas, IMCA D014 through Europe and Asia-Pacific, and OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart T in United States waters. Approval of the firm itself, granted by a classification society, answers a different question than the diver's card does. For polishing alone, class approval matters less than it does for survey work - but if the attendance is also expected to produce a condition record the society will look at, it matters as much, and the contractor should be approved for it.
The deliverable is short but specific: video of each blade before and after, the finish grade achieved, note of any damage found with its location on the blade, anode condition, and the diver's assessment of what the next interval should be. Where the visit is intended to support a class record, it runs alongside the visual underwater inspection of the hull and appendages rather than as a standalone job.
