A ship does not always have to leave the water to have its hull tested. What Underwater NDT Covers

In-Water Survey Instead of Drydocking

The reason underwater NDT matters to an operator is UWILD, underwater inspection in lieu of drydocking. A qualifying vessel with the right class notation can substitute a scheduled bottom survey with a diver or ROV survey in the water, and the NDT is the measured part of it, the evidence that lets the surveyor credit the survey. It runs alongside the visual side, the underwater inspection of coatings, anodes, and fouling, and together they can keep a ship trading through a survey window that would otherwise mean a dock.

Divers, ROV, and Certification

The results only count if the people and the process are certified. Underwater NDT technicians hold diver-NDT qualifications such as CSWIP 3.1U or 3.2U, the equipment is calibrated for use in water, and the company is approved by the class society witnessing the survey. Reporting follows the society's format, with the readings, the locations, and the calibration recorded. Above the waterline the same structure is covered by NDT and remote inspection, so the two together survey the whole hull.
