The NDT That Backs the Visual

Remote visual inspection finds the suspect areas; NDT confirms whether they are defects. Magnetic particle inspection brings out surface and near-surface cracks in welds and steel, ultrasonic testing measures remaining thickness and finds flaws below the surface, and dye penetrant covers non-magnetic work. On a hull survey the thickness side is often a scope of its own, handled as hull thickness gauging, while the remote and NDT crew cover the crack detection and the harder-to-reach steel.

Class Acceptance and Certification

Because the output feeds a class survey, the credentials behind it matter as much as the images. RIT operators hold the qualification the class society requires for remote inspection, NDT technicians are certified to ISO 9712 or SNT-TC-1A for the methods they run, and the company itself is approved for class-witnessed work. The report has to arrive in the format the surveyor and the society accept, with the findings, the coverage, and the calibration behind them. Above the waterline this is one part of the picture; below it, the same steel is checked by underwater NDT without drydocking.
