Hull Cleaning

Hull Cleaning Companies

Every hull fouls. A coating slows the process and changes what settles, but nothing stops it: slime forms on a static hull within days, and warm water and idle time carry it through to weed, then to barnacles and calcareous tubeworms cemented into the paint. Roughness rises, frictional resistance rises with it, and the main engine either burns more fuel or gives up speed. Underwater hull cleaning removes that growth alongside or at anchor, without taking the ship off hire, which is why it is scheduled against a port call rather than a docking window. Hull cleaning companies differ in three things that matter: the method they can apply to a given coating, whether they hold a port permit for in-water cleaning with capture, and what they can hand a surveyor afterwards.

What Hull Cleaning Companies Actually Do

The booked scope is rarely the flat bottom alone. A full ship hull cleaning covers vertical sides, boot top, flat bottom and bilge keels, plus the niche areas that foul first: sea chests and their gratings, box cooler cages, bow thruster tunnels, the rudder and rudder horn, and the bulbous bow. Niche areas take longer per square metre than open plating and are priced separately by most contractors, so an enquiry that omits them will come back cheaper than the job you actually need.

Cleaning is not survey. An underwater inspection documents condition for class or for the owner; cleaning changes it.

The two are often booked in one mobilisation because the diving spread is already in the water, and the same visit routinely absorbs propeller polishing, anode checks and any small repair the findings call for. This is not boat hull cleaning scaled up: the coating systems, the permit regime and the reporting expected by class have nothing in common with the leisure market.

Biofouling Stages and What Each One Costs

Fouling arrives in a predictable sequence. A conditioning film of dissolved organic matter forms almost immediately on immersion. Bacterial slime and diatoms follow within days of a static period, and this microfouling alone already changes the hydrodynamic character of the surface. Soft macrofouling comes next over weeks: green and brown algae, hydroids, bryozoans, tube-forming worms in their early stage. Hard fouling develops over months, and in warm tropical water considerably faster, as barnacles, calcareous tubeworms, oysters and mussels cement themselves to the coating.

The cost mechanism is roughness. Added roughness thickens the turbulent boundary layer and increases frictional resistance, which is the dominant resistance component on a full-form merchant hull at service speed. The main engine either burns more fuel for the same speed or loses speed at the same power, and the effect compounds because a rougher surface recruits new settlement more readily than a smooth one. Hard fouling also carries a regulatory dimension. Port states screen arriving hulls for non-indigenous species, so the case for underwater ship hull cleaning is no longer only economic.

Underwater Hull Cleaning Methods: Brush Cart, Cavitation and Robotic Crawler

Three families of method are in commercial use, and they are not interchangeable.

Brush carts are diver-guided units with counter-rotating brushes, driven hydraulically or by water pressure, held against the plating by thrust or by the reaction of the brushes themselves. Brush stiffness is selected for the fouling and the coating: nylon and polypropylene grades for soft growth, stiffer grades or blades for calcareous fouling. They are the fastest option on established hard fouling and the most likely to damage a soft coating.

Cavitation and water-jet units clean without bristle contact. A cavitating or high-pressure jet lifts growth off the surface, which suits coatings that tolerate no mechanical abrasion, but it works more slowly against barnacle bases and is generally used for grooming rather than heavy removal.

Robotic crawlers adhere magnetically or by thrust, carry their own brush or jet head, and route the removed material through an integrated suction and filtration circuit to a surface unit.

The underwater hull cleaning tools around the method matter as much as the method: surface-supplied diving spread, hydraulic power packs, filtration and settlement equipment for captured debris, helmet and hull-mounted cameras, and coating thickness gauges for before-and-after readings.

Matching the Method to the Coating

Self-polishing copolymer works by controlled hydrolysis of the binder, releasing a thin surface layer in service. Aggressive brushing removes far more than the spent leached layer, shortens the remaining service life of the scheme and dumps biocide into the water column in a single event. Soft or medium brushes and light passes are the norm.

Foul-release coatings — silicone and fluoropolymer — hold no biocide; they work by low surface energy and low elastic modulus, which is exactly what makes them vulnerable. Stiff bristles and hard particles scratch and tear them, damage is permanent until the next dry docking, and most manufacturers treat a non-compliant clean as grounds to void the coating warranty. Soft-brush grooming or jet units are the accepted approach.

Hard antifouling, including vinyl and epoxy-based schemes, tolerates stiffer brushes but does not renew its own surface, so cleaning exposes no fresh biocide and the interval to the next clean tends to shorten.

For this reason a useful enquiry to underwater hull cleaning services states the coating manufacturer, product name, application date, dry film thickness and previous cleaning history. Without that, the contractor selects a method blind.

Robotic Hull Cleaning and ROV Systems Against Diver Teams

Robotic systems have moved from trials into routine port service, and they arrive in three commercial shapes. Contractor-mobilised units are launched from a support vessel alongside: magnetically adhering crawlers carrying a brush or jet head, or thrust-held vehicles working off a filtration spread on deck, with everything removed drawn through a suction circuit and filtered before any water returns to the sea. Subscription operators sell frequent light grooming instead of a periodic heavy clean, committing to a hull condition rather than to a number of visits. Coating manufacturers have gone furthest, supplying a robot together with the antifouling it was designed for and keeping the unit aboard the ship, so cleaning no longer depends on whether a contractor works that port. Some operators market any of these as ROV hull cleaning, though most units are crawlers on the hull rather than free-swimming vehicles.

A hull cleaning robot has the advantage where diving is prohibited or restricted, where capture is a condition of the permit, and on foul-release coatings that need frequent gentle passes. Divers retain the advantage on established hard fouling, inside sea chests and behind gratings, in confined niche areas a crawler cannot reach, and wherever the visit is expected to produce judgement on condition or immediate remedial work rather than a cleaned surface alone.

Port Permits, Waste Capture and the BIMCO In-Water Cleaning Standard

In-water cleaning is a regulated activity, not a commercial arrangement between owner and diver. The IMO 2023 Biofouling Guidelines, resolution MEPC.378(80), set the framework for biofouling management plans and record books and address in-water cleaning and inspection. The BIMCO and ICS Industry Standard on In-Water Cleaning with Capture, published in 2021 and widely referred to as the BIMCO hull cleaning standard, sets out how a cleaning company demonstrates that its system captures and filters removed material, and provides an approval procedure owners can require in the contract.

Capture matters most on biocidal schemes, because cleaning an antifouling coating releases the spent leached layer along with the growth. Jurisdictions differ sharply. Australia, New Zealand and California operate the tightest regimes; Singapore, the Gulf ports and much of northern Europe require prior permission and, in many cases, capture. Some ports permit underwater ship cleaning only with an approved capture system, some allow grooming but not removal of established fouling, and some prohibit it outright at certain berths. A contractor that holds written port permission is a different proposition from one that simply owns diving equipment, and the permit, not the price, is usually what determines whether the job can proceed on the scheduled date.

Scheduling Hull Cleaning Services Against CII and the Trading Pattern

Two scheduling philosophies exist. Proactive grooming applies frequent, light passes that remove slime before macrofouling establishes, which suits foul-release coatings and liner trades on fixed rotations. Reactive cleaning waits for measurable performance loss or a visual inspection result, which suits hard antifouling and irregular trading but accepts a period of degraded performance before each intervention.

The Carbon Intensity Indicator, in force since 1 January 2023, gives the choice a rating consequence: hull condition is one of the few operational levers available within an annual reporting period, so a vessel trending towards a lower band is normally cleaned before the year closes rather than after. Charter parties add their own pressure, since performance warranties and speed and consumption claims frequently turn on whether the hull was cleaned within a stated period.

Vessel hull cleaning is also timed against the docking cycle and the intermediate survey window. Booking the clean in the same call as the underwater inspection required for that survey removes one mobilisation from the budget.

Commercial Diver Certification and Class Acceptance

Diver qualification and contractor approval are separate questions, and owners routinely confuse them. Individual competence is evidenced against the ADCI Consensus Standards for Commercial Diving and Underwater Operations, against IMCA D014 for offshore diving practice, and, for work in United States waters, against OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart T. Contractor approval is granted by a classification society to the firm as a service supplier, and it is that approval, not the individual diver's card, which determines whether a society will accept the resulting report in lieu of docking.

The deliverable a surveyor accepts is specific: continuous recorded video with running commentary and diver location, still images referenced to a hull plan or a numbered grid, before-and-after coverage per area, coating condition and residual thickness readings where taken, and anode condition. Where corrosion or weld defects are found, the same visit can extend into underwater NDT to establish remaining thickness rather than leaving the finding open until dry docking, and into underwater welding and cutting if the defect has to be closed before the ship sails.

What to Verify Before Booking a Hull Cleaning Company

  • Written port authority permission for in-water cleaning at the specific berth or anchorage, with capture, rather than a general statement that the company operates in that country.
  • A method statement naming the equipment to be used against your specific coating product, and confirmation from the coating manufacturer's guidance that it does not compromise the warranty.
  • Physical presence in the ports on your rotation. Contractors listing global coverage frequently subcontract, which changes who is insured, who holds the permit and who signs the report.
  • Report format and turnaround: what video, images and measurements are included, in what file format, and how many days after completion the report is issued.
  • Whether propeller polishing, anode inspection, minor propeller repair and niche area cleaning are included in the same attendance or quoted as separate mobilisations.
  • Insurance in force, with explicit cover for coating damage. A cheap hull cleaning service that scratches a foul-release scheme costs more than the saving at the next docking.
  • Class approval as a service supplier where the visit is intended to support a survey credit.
  • Waste handling: where captured material and filtrate go ashore, and whether disposal receipts are provided.

Hull Cleaning Companies by Country

Permit regimes, accepted practice and diver availability differ sharply by jurisdiction, so most owners shortlist by port of call before they compare contractors at all. Cleaning that is routine in one country needs written permission in the next and is prohibited at certain berths in a third. Where a rotation covers several of these markets, it is worth establishing which hull cleaning companies can attend in more than one of them under their own permits rather than through a local subcontractor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should a ship's hull be cleaned?

There is no fixed interval. Frequency follows the coating type, water temperature on the trade, the proportion of time spent static, and observed performance data. Vessels idling in warm water foul fastest. Most operators trigger a booking with their hull cleaning company on performance monitoring or an inspection result rather than on a calendar date.

Is in-water hull cleaning allowed in every port?

No. Underwater hull cleaning services are permit-controlled in most major jurisdictions, and several allow work only with an approved capture and filtration system. Elsewhere the permission is routine but still has to be obtained in advance, and individual terminals refuse it at particular berths. Confirm the permit for the specific berth before fixing the attendance date, not after.

What is the difference between hull cleaning and hull grooming?

Grooming means frequent, gentle passes that remove slime and early settlement before macrofouling establishes, keeping the surface continuously clean. Cleaning means removing fouling that has already developed, which requires more aggressive equipment. Grooming suits foul-release coatings; cleaning is the reactive response on biocidal schemes.

Diver or robot: which suits my coating?

Foul-release silicone and fluoropolymer schemes generally favour robotic or jet systems with soft contact and frequent passes. Established hard fouling on biocidal antifouling usually needs a diver-operated brush cart. Sea chests, gratings and confined niche areas need divers regardless of what the flat bottom receives.

Should hull cleaning and propeller polishing be booked together?

Usually yes. The diving spread is already mobilised, and propeller polishing addresses a roughness penalty that is independent of the hull, so one combined attendance costs less than two.
