With our help, you can ensure your vessel stays compliant and protected at all times.

Types and Classes of Marine Fire Extinguishers

Ships use three main types of extinguishers: portable, semi-portable, and fixed systems. Each is placed based on risk areas and space. Portable ones are common in cabins and engine rooms. Semi-portable extinguishers are larger, wheeled models typically used in machinery spaces. Fixed systems, like CO₂ or foam setups, are built into engine rooms and cargo holds for fast suppression of large fires.

Marine fire extinguishers are designed to fight different fire classes under SOLAS regulations. Here's a quick breakdown of the five fire classes and the agents used to handle them:

1. Class A – Solid combustibles like wood, fabric, or paper → Water or foam extinguishers
2. Class B – Flammable liquids such as fuel or oil → Foam, dry chemical, or CO₂ extinguishers
3. Class C – Gases like propane or butane → Dry chemical extinguishers
4. Class D – Combustible metals → Specialized dry powder extinguishers
5. Class E – Electrical fires → CO₂ or dry chemical extinguishers

Each vessel must carry the right combination based on its layout, operations, and flag-state rules.

Standards and Certifications for Marine Fire Extinguishers

Marine fire extinguishers must follow strict safety rules to be used on ships. These standards help ensure that the equipment works properly and keeps vessels in line with legal requirements.

Here are the main certifications to look for:

• SOLAS / IMO – Required for all fire protection systems on international ships
• MED (Wheelmark) – Approval for EU-flagged vessels
• USCG Approved – For ships under the U.S. flag
• UL Marine / EN3 – Performance and durability tests for marine environments
• Class Society Approval – From DNV, ABS, BV, LR, and others

Before buying, always check that the extinguisher has valid markings and documentation. Reputable fire extinguisher suppliers will ensure full compliance with these marine safety standards.
