Firefighter Axe Suppliers
Marine fire axes are specialized firefighting tools supplied for use on board as part of the fireman’s outfit required under SOLAS. The market is dominated by major safety-equipment brands such as Survitec and DSS Protection, alongside regional marine fire axes suppliers, with many Chinese OEMs such as Kunshan EMF and Shanghai Yibei offering low-cost units.
Weight, Visibility, and Build Quality in Marine Fire Axes
Marine fire axes are usually compared by steel head quality, handle material, size, and compliance. Most models combine a heat-treated pick head with either a wood or non-conductive handle, and some offer 2 kV insulation for extra electrical safety. Shorter axes are easier to carry and use in confined spaces, while longer ones deliver more force but add weight. For most buyers, the priority is a durable, well-balanced axe with clear SOLAS/FSS Code conformity and high-visibility painted heads.
- Blade and head material: Most marine fire axes use a heat-treated high-carbon or alloy steel head for hardness and toughness, often with a corrosion-resistant finish for shipboard service.
- Handle type: Handles are typically either wood or non-conductive materials such as fiberglass with rubber or plastic covering. Insulated versions are common, with published ratings ranging from 2 kV to 10 kV DC on 330 mm short axes and up to 12 kV DC on 90 cm long models.
- Size and weight: Sizes range from about 0.28-0.33 m for compact or waist-carried axes up to 0.9-1.0 m for full-size long-handled models. Weight typically falls between about 0.6 and 2.8 kg, with compact models around 0.8-0.9 kg and long insulated axes around 2.6-2.8 kg.
- Compliance and approvals: Buyers usually look first for clear SOLAS/FSS Code conformity, then for any supporting electrical test data.
Most FAQs
Wood vs fiberglass (FRP) handles - which is better?
Wood handles (ash/hickory) are traditional, affordable and inherently insulative (meets SOLAS). They do absorb water and can splinter. Fiberglass or composite handles are lighter, non-absorbing, and can be made electrically insulated. Modern high-end axes often use FRP or plastic handles for durability.
Why 2 kV testing?
Ships carry high-voltage systems; an insulated handle axe protects against shock. Modern axes, are tested to 2 kV so a firefighter won’t get electrocuted touching an energized panel. Not all axes require this, but it adds safety.
Can these axes cut through steel bulkheads?
Fire axes are primarily for chopping wood or soft materials and for breaking smaller non-structural elements. The pick head can puncture or pry at thinner materials (e.g. deck plating up to a few mm). For heavy steel, specialized tools (torches, hydraulic rescue gear) are needed. Don’t expect a firefighting axe to rapidly breach thick hull plating.
Marine fire axes are essential safety components that provide firefighters with the leverage and insulation needed to navigate shipboard emergencies and confined spaces.
