Welders (Hot Work Repair Teams)

Marine Welders

Between finding a crack and striking an arc stands a chain of decisions: whether the crew's tickets cover the repair, whether the space can be made safe to burn in, whether class must see it, and whether the job fits a port stay or needs people who sail. Marine welders and hot work repair teams exist for the repairs that outgrow the ship's own capability - in scale, in qualification, or simply in hands - and hiring them well is mostly a matter of matching the team's paperwork to the weld's consequences.

What the Teams Actually Do

The bread of the trade is steel repair afloat and alongside: cracked brackets and foundations, wasted plating cropped and renewed with insert plates, fractured pipe supports, coaming and hatch repairs, sea-fastening for project cargo. The distinguishing habit of a good team is how it treats permanence - class practice prefers cropping and inserting new material over doubling plates for lasting repairs, and a contractor who proposes an insert with proper edge preparation is speaking the surveyor's language before the surveyor arrives. Larger scopes blur into fabrication: where whole sections are renewed, the panels are often made ashore and fitted aboard, which is the territory shared with steel prefabrication and renewal contractors and frequently the same companies wearing a different hat.

Qualifications: The Welder, the Procedure, the Witness

Three documents decide whether a repair weld counts. A marine welder's qualification - ISO 9606 or an equivalent scheme - certifies the person for the process, material, thickness, and position, and a certificate that does not cover overhead plate work does not cover the job in the bilge. The welding procedure specification defines how the joint is made: consumable, preheat, parameters, sequence. And where the repair touches class items, the society's involvement is arranged before the work, with the surveyor deciding what to witness and what to credit from records. Teams that arrive with current certificates, written procedures, and the habit of calling class early cost slightly more per hour and considerably less per repair.

Hot Work Safety as Part of the Service

Aboard a tanker or anywhere near cargo residues, the burning question is literal. Hot work runs under a permit regime - atmosphere tested and certified gas-free where required, adjacent spaces checked, fire watch posted through the work and after it, blankets and screens rigged over what cannot be moved. A professional team treats the permit process as its own first task rather than the ship's obstacle: it brings the meters, understands the vessel's system, and its supervisor signs the permit knowing what the signatures mean. The one question worth asking a contractor before any tanker job is who provides the gas measurements and the fire watch - the answer reveals the safety culture faster than any brochure.

Proving the Weld

A repair weld on anything structural is finished when it is verified, not when it cools. Visual inspection by the team's own supervisor comes first; beyond it, the verification method follows the item - and arranging the examination is part of the repair plan, not an afterthought, because the surveyor credits the repair on the report. That handoff runs to marine NDT services, ideally booked into the same attendance window so the welds are tested while the access and staging still exist. The complete package a superintendent should expect at the end: weld map, welder identities against each joint, consumable batch references, permit records, and the examination results - one file, survey-ready.

Port Gang or Riding Team

The same companies typically sell two rhythms of the same trade. A port gang works alongside during cargo operations or a short lay-by - right for defined, accessible jobs with the material known in advance. A riding team sails, and turns sea days into repair days for scopes too long for any port stay: framing renewals, extended crack programs, accommodation steel. The riding decision changes the checklist - berths and victualling, the flag's requirements for supernumeraries, tools and consumables sized for the leg with no hardware store at sea - and it rewards contractors experienced enough to bring their own consumable stock, ovens included, rather than gambling on the ship's locker. The cost comparison usually surprises: a riding team's day rate looks heavy against a port gang's until it is divided by working hours actually delivered, with no gangway interruptions, no permit queues shared with cargo operations, and no second mobilization when the port stay ends before the scope does.

Emergency response is the trade's third rhythm, and worth one line of preparation before it is needed: knowing which contractor in the loop can mobilize to the vessel's regular ports within a day, with qualifications that match the fleet's steel, turns a weather-damage morning from a search into a phone call.

Choosing the Team

  • Certificates against the actual scope - welder qualifications covering the materials, thicknesses, and positions of this job, current on the attendance date.
  • Procedures in writing - a WPS for the joints planned, and the willingness to draft one for the odd repair rather than improvise.
  • Class fluency - IACS society approvals where offered, and the reflex of involving the surveyor before cutting.
  • Safety self-sufficiency - gas testing, fire watch, and protective rigging offered as part of the quotation, not assumed from the crew.
  • Verification arranged, not mentioned - examination of the finished welds coordinated within the same attendance, with the records package defined up front.

Describe the defect, the material and thickness, the access, and the window - then let the answers about qualifications and permits separate the bidders. The providers below differ by service area, riding team availability, verification, guarantee terms, and IACS approvals, and marine welders selected on their paperwork weld no worse for it.
