NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) Service Providers

Which test will the surveyor accept - that question decides an NDT booking long before price enters the conversation. Marine NDT services answer a narrow question with certainty: is there a crack, a lack of fusion, or a subsurface defect in this component, without cutting it open or taking it out of service. Choose a method the material cannot support and the report proves nothing; the attending surveyor rejects it and the vessel pays for a second attendance.

The demand appears at fixed points in a vessel's life: tailshaft and rudder surveys, weld verification after steel renewal, crack investigation after a grounding or a machinery failure, and periodic examination of lifting appliances. Each carries its own method expectations and acceptance criteria, so the provider has to arrive with the right technique, the right consumables, and paperwork the class society involved will recognize.

Matching the Method to the Component

  • Magnetic particle inspection (MT) - the default for surface and near-surface cracks in ferromagnetic steel: propeller shaft tapers and keyways at tailshaft survey, crane hooks, rudder stocks, and welded brackets. Fast and inexpensive, but blind on bronze, austenitic stainless, and aluminum.
  • Dye penetrant testing (PT) - surface-breaking defects in materials MT cannot magnetize: repaired bronze propeller blades, stainless cargo piping welds, aluminum superstructure details.
  • Ultrasonic flaw detection and phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) - volumetric examination of welds and forgings: butt welds in renewed shell plating, crane pedestal connections, suspect crankshaft fillets. PAUT produces a recorded scan the surveyor can review after the technician has left.
  • Radiographic testing (RT) - the reference volumetric method for pipe butt welds and high-integrity joints, at the cost of radiation permits and controlled access around the shot area.
  • Eddy current testing (ET) - crack detection through intact paint, which is why it earns its fee on coated deck welds and hatch coaming corners: no blasting before, no coating repair after.

Crew-level checks between attendances are a different budget line: an MT yoke, a penetrant spray set, or a basic flaw detector kept on board comes from NDT equipment suppliers, and it lets the chief officer screen a suspect crane hook before deciding whether a certified attendance is needed. The formal survey item still closes only on a certified firm's report.

Where Class Demands NDT

The clearest recurring trigger is the tailshaft survey: rules require crack detection - in practice MT - around the forward end of the taper and the keyway, because that is where fatigue cracks in shafts start. Steel renewal is the second: a surveyor credits a repair only after the new welds have been examined, normally in the same attendance window as the hot work repair teams that made them. Damage assessment after contact or grounding, crack checks on crane hooks and loose lifting gear alongside proof load testing, and examination of suspect machinery components round out the routine scope. In every case the acceptance criteria come from the classification society's rules for the specific item, not from a generic industrial code - a weld that would pass a shore fabrication standard can still fail a class acceptance line.

Defect Finding and Wastage Mapping in One Attendance

NDT finds discrete defects - cracks, lack of fusion, laminations - in specific components. Plate wastage across tanks and holds is a mapping campaign run by thickness gauging services under their own approval regime, usually ahead of a renewal survey, and a firm quoting both scopes in one attendance saves the vessel a mobilization fee - provided it holds the separate approvals each scope requires.

The Technician and the Firm Behind the Report

Two certificates decide whether a report survives scrutiny. The technician needs personnel certification in the specific method, typically ISO 9712 Level 2 or an SNT-TC-1A qualification under the employer's written practice - a Level 2 in MT proves nothing about the same person's ultrasonic work. The firm needs recognition from the classification society: Bureau Veritas publishes its requirements for NDT suppliers as NR669, and other IACS members run equivalent approval schemes. Reports from marine NDT services are only as strong as what they document - method and technique used, calibration references, acceptance standard applied, extent of coverage, and the certificate numbers of the people who did the work. A clean result signed by an uncertified operator is not evidence; it is a reason to test again.

What to Verify Before the Team Boards

  • Class recognition - the firm holds current approval from the society the vessel is classed with, for the methods being bought, not just a quality system certificate.
  • Method-specific personnel certificates - ISO 9712 or SNT-TC-1A level and method matched to the job, with certificates valid on the attendance date.
  • Equipment actually in-house - PAUT and ET capability owned and calibrated by the firm itself; subcontracted kit at short notice is where attendance dates slip.
  • Riding team option - technicians who can sail with the vessel and complete the scope on passage when the port stay is too short for the weld count.
  • Report format and turnaround - a sample report reviewed before booking, and a committed delivery date, because the surveyor closes the item on the report, not on the test.

Timing is the real constraint: the test has to land inside the survey window, in a port where the firm can attend, with the paperwork ready before the surveyor's visit. Compare providers below by service area, riding team availability, IACS class approvals, and verification status, then state the component, material, and survey item in the first message - that is what lets marine NDT services quote a method and a date instead of a question list.
