Globe Valves in Marine Service

A globe valve uses a moving disc that travels down onto a seat to restrict flow. The flow path is not straight, so pressure loss is higher than through gate or ball valves, but in return you get much better control over flow and differential pressure.

On a typical vessel, globe valves are found in:

seawater and fresh-water cooling lines
fuel and lubricating oil lines where controlled flow or balancing is needed
steam and condensate lines
drains, bypass lines and other places where frequent adjustment is expected

Two points shape most choices on board:

Function in the line - If the valve is used for balancing flows, regulating cooling, trimming fuel or steam, or controlling drains, a globe valve is usually preferred to a gate valve because the disc and seat are designed for throttling. For simple isolation with minimal pressure loss, other valve types may be better.
Design and material - Straight and angle globe valves are both common in marine service. Angle valves often help with layout and drainage, especially in cooling and fuel systems. Bodies are typically bronze for seawater, cast iron for water and oil duties, and steel or stainless steel for higher pressure, higher temperature or more demanding services. Internal sealing parts are often bronze or stainless to improve wear and corrosion resistance.

In practice, a suitable marine globe valve is one that matches the line duty, pressure/temperature rating, piping standard and class expectations, and gives predictable control.
