Steel wire rope is not the only option on board anymore — high-modulus synthetics have taken over many stations — but on tankers, offshore units, and a large share of older bulkers, wire is still the line that bears the load.

Why Mooring Wires Still Matter on Modern Ships
OCIMF guidance pushed many tanker operators toward synthetic tails on wire main lines rather than full wire-to-wire moorings, but the wire itself has not gone away.
Tanker mooring decks still run 6-strand galvanized wire on the warping drums. AHTS vessels still spool kilometres of high-grade work wire for anchor handling and rig moves. Bulk carriers and older container ships keep wire on the stern winches because the drums and fairleads were designed for it.
Replacing wire with HMPE rope often forces a winch refit and a fresh stress analysis, neither of which a deck superintendent takes on lightly. The wire stays — and so does the procurement work behind it, which is where suppliers of mooring wires earn their place.
Constructions and Grades Providers of Mooring Wires Carry
Most merchant fleet orders fall into a narrow band. Ships use 6×36 IWRC (Independent Wire Rope Core) or 6×37 construction, hot-dip galvanized, in 32 mm to 56 mm diameter, with a tensile grade of 1960 N/mm² or 2160 N/mm². Fibre-core wires are still ordered for warping lines and lighter mooring work, but IWRC is the default where MBL matters. Providers of mooring wires hold:

MEG4, Class Approvals, and the Paperwork That Comes With the Reel
OCIMF’s MEG4 changed the way tanker operators specify mooring lines. Ordering by MBL alone has been replaced by Ship Design MBL and Line Design Break Force (LDBF), with a defined working range and retirement criteria. Suppliers of mooring wires that work in the tanker market quote against this framework as standard.
Every reel should ship with an EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate, a test certificate to ISO 2408 or EN 12385, and the manufacturer’s Line Management Plan template where MEG4 applies. Class type approval from DNV, ABS, Lloyd’s Register, Bureau Veritas, RINA, NK, KR, or CCS is normal for new tanker and offshore deliveries.
The retirement check itself sits in ISO 4309. Crews count wire breaks across a lay, gauge any loss in rope diameter against the new-rope dimension, judge how far surface corrosion has progressed, and watch for kinks, birdcaging, and core protrusion. If a vendor cannot put any of this paperwork on the table when asked, the conversation is done.
Where Distributors of Mooring Wires Add Real Value
A reel of wire delivered raw to the quay is, on its own, not much use. The work that distributors of mooring wires do around the rope is where the difference shows.
The better vendors splice and ferrule eyes in-house, with witness test reports issued under the same job number as the wire. They spool the rope onto the actual winch drum the ship has fitted, not to a nominal length on the order, which saves the crew a long re-spool in port. Before the reel leaves the warehouse, the wire eye and the matching synthetic tail are dry-fitted together, so the deck crew is not stuck reworking a thimble or a shackle on the morning of a turnaround.

A wire only performs as well as the fittings it runs through. Chocks, fairleads, bitts, and pedestal rollers all carry the same load, and a chafed lip or a worn roller will cut into a galvanized wire faster than the weather will.
