How Radar Absorbing Coatings Work
The coating turns radar energy into a small amount of heat before it can bounce back. Two mechanisms do this: magnetic absorbers loaded with iron or ferrite, and dielectric absorbers that trap the wave in a lossy layer. Either way the material is tuned to a frequency band, because a coating that absorbs one radar band well may do little at another. Thickness and layer construction matter as much as chemistry, since the absorbing layer has to be a set fraction of the wavelength to work. Where It Is Used
Most demand is signature control on naval and patrol vessels, cutting the radar cross-section of hulls, superstructures, and mast arrays so the ship is harder to detect and track. The civilian side is smaller but real: absorbing panels and coatings around a vessel's own antennas, on offshore structures, and on mast furniture reduce the false echoes and clutter that reflective surfaces create on the radar picture. In both cases the coating is specified against a frequency band and a surface, not chosen from a colour card.

The order turns on the frequency band, the absorption level needed, the coating weight the structure can carry, and the marine durability, since a coating that degrades in salt and UV loses its whole point. These materials are often export-controlled or supplied to a defence specification, so sourcing comes with end-use documentation and technical support rather than a catalogue product.
