Pilot Ladders Suppliers

The SOLAS amendments that came into force on 1 January 2028 reset how pilot ladders are bought, kept, and replaced on commercial vessels. Three rules took effect at once: a fixed 36-month service life from the date of manufacture, the end of manufacturer self-certification, and a tighter type-approval regime run by flag state Administrations. For procurement teams, that means buying more often from a narrower pool of approved makers. RecordsMarine connects fleets with pilot ladders suppliers already operating to the new standards.

What the 2028 Amendments Actually Change

In December 2024, the IMO's Maritime Safety Committee approved a consolidated performance standard for pilot transfer arrangements at MSC 109. It applies to new builds and existing ships. SOLAS vessels must comply by the first survey after 1 January 2029, and non-SOLAS ships by the first survey after 1 January 2030. For procurement teams sourcing through providers of pilot ladders, that timeline drives the ordering rhythm for the next several years.

The shifts that matter to procurement teams:

  • A 36-month shelf life on ladders, manropes, and held spares, counted from the manufacture date
  • A spare ladder and spare manropes carried as standard
  • Removal of manufacturer self-certification, replaced by Administration type approval
  • Trapdoor designs aligned with ISO 799-3:2022
  • New gear introduced for securing ladders at intermediate lengths

At the fleet level, the practical effect is more ladder purchases per year and a contracting list of qualified makers. Established suppliers of pilot ladders have already begun reshaping stock holdings and certification workflows to match the new cycle.

The Regulatory Framework Behind a Conforming Ladder

Three layers of rule-making apply. SOLAS Chapter V Regulation 23 sets the underlying obligation. IMO Resolution A.1045(27) describes the recommended arrangement in operational detail. The ISO 799 series carries the technical specification, split across three parts:

  • ISO 799-1:2019 — design and specification
  • ISO 799-2:2021 — maintenance, use, survey
  • ISO 799-3:2022 — attachments and associated equipment

A handful of construction points come up repeatedly during port state inspection. Where a step is cut from hardwood, the piece needs to be solid timber with no knot lines passing through it. Each tread carries a non-slip surface. Side ropes run through the full working section without splices in the load path. Spreaders sit at the intervals the standard requires. Securing with cable ties, hose clips, or U-clamps is explicitly out of bounds and triggers immediate non-conformance, though it continues to appear on inspection reports.

The stronger suppliers of pilot ladders build to these specs as a baseline and ship a certificate of conformity with every unit.

The Defects That Keep Causing Detentions

The IMPA Safety Campaign publishes the same fault pattern year after year. Established suppliers of pilot ladders flag these defect categories on their own technical sheets: side ropes worn or splayed at the wear points; spreaders missing, broken, or installed too high in the working length; steps cracked, twisted, or showing rot; manropes absent, undersized, or rigged at the wrong length; and securing arrangements improvised with hardware that has no business on a transfer rig.

The operational consequence: refusals at the pilot station are now a real cost line. Where a ladder fails initial inspection, pilots turn back rather than risking the climb, and the ports back that call rather than pressing the boarding through.

Capable providers of pilot ladders ship the full rig in one consignment — ladder, manropes, spreaders, plus chains and shackles for securing — so nothing is missing at the gangway. Conformity documents travel with each unit in a layout that lets the boarding pilot match markings against paperwork without calling ship management.

Materials, Dimensions, and Spec-Sheet Checks

A short list worth confirming before approving an order:

  • Step material — ash, oak, or another hardwood approved by class; alternative materials require an equivalency certificate
  • Side rope — manila or polypropylene, continuous through the working length with no splices in load-bearing sections
  • Step geometry — minimum 480 mm wide, 115 mm deep, 25 mm thick; vertical spacing 310–350 mm
  • Spreader steps — at least 1.8 m long, set to prevent rotation under load
  • Manropes — 28–32 mm diameter, fixed length where the arrangement requires it
  • Markings — maker identity, manufacture date, and certification reference on the ladder

Cross-checking the spec sheet against ISO 799-1:2019 takes five minutes. It costs far less than a return port call after a pilot refusal. Experienced suppliers of pilot ladders publish full dimensional data alongside the certification and apply markings to units before they leave the warehouse.

Type-Approved Manufacturers and Brand Coverage

The recognised manufacturer pool is short. ESM Group, Schoellhorn-Albrecht, MOB Marine, and Aalesund Marine appear most often across commercial fleets, with class certification typically held from DNV, Lloyd's Register, ABS, or Bureau Veritas, and distribution running through agents at the main supply hubs.

As Administrations take type approval over from manufacturers, vendor portfolios narrow further. Working through that shift is easier with a partner already building to ISO 799 and treating class certificates as part of standard delivery. The stronger providers of pilot ladders source only from factories whose approval status they reconfirm at the order stage — essential once the 2028 changeover removes the self-certification fallback.

Fleets ordering pilot ladders alongside other equipment in the same procurement window — gangways, accommodation ladders, embarkation gear — often consolidate through a vendor handling the broader transfer and access equipment range, which trims paperwork and lead times.

Filtering the Vendor List

Strong providers of pilot ladders generally clear all five points worth comparing in the directory below:

  • Certification from major class societies and flag state Administrations
  • Direct manufacturer relationships and stock positions at hub ports
  • Lead times for spare ladders ahead of the 36-month rotation
  • Supply of complete rigging packages rather than ladders alone
  • Documentation quality and inspection-ready certificates

Sourcing the Right Supplier

Filter the listing below by class approval, port reach, and stock depth to find a vendor capable of carrying your fleet through the 2028 transition and the surveys that follow. RecordsMarine maintains an updated directory of qualified pilot ladders suppliers serving commercial shipping worldwide.
