Global Ship Services (GSS)

Global Ship Services (GSS) is a maritime supply and logistics provider that functions primarily as a ship chandler, serving the commercial shipping industry through the procurement and delivery of vessel necessities. Founded in 1975 in New Orleans, Louisiana, the company initially operated as a small-scale, locally focused business established by Captain Vinod Saigal. Over the subsequent decades, it underwent significant ownership changes and operational expansion, evolving from a local "mom-and-pop" supplier into a broader entity with a presence across the United States Gulf Coast and various international maritime hubs. The company’s corporate history is marked by a distinct series of transformations. In 1993, ownership transferred to Salim Shaikh, initiating a period of growth that saw the workforce and infrastructure expand significantly. By 2010, the company merged with Alliance Ship Management, a major operator in the region, which subsequently merged with Ship Supply of Florida. Following the closure of the latter entity in 2019, Global Ship Services recommenced independent operations under its original identity. This restructuring allowed the organization to retain experienced personnel and established infrastructure, effectively restoring its brand while maintaining continuity in its service capabilities. Operationally, GSS specializes in the comprehensive supply of merchant vessels, offering a "one-stop" solution for deck, engine, and cabin stores. Its core competencies involve the sourcing and logistical management of fresh, frozen, and dry provisions, as well as bonded stores and technical equipment. Beyond basic provisioning, the company manages complex supply chains to deliver nautical equipment, safety gear, and heavy machinery parts. The organization maintains its own warehousing facilities, particularly in key US energy ports such as Houston, Corpus Christi, and New Orleans, ensuring that inventory is readily available for vessels calling at these high-traffic terminals. In addition to standard ship chandling, the company has diversified its maritime role to include independent marine and cargo surveying. This division conducts damage surveys, on-hire and off-hire condition inspections, and cargo integrity checks, providing ship owners and managers with critical data regarding their assets. While rooted deeply in the US Gulf market, the company extends its reach through a network of operational bases and partnerships in global locations such as Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and the Netherlands, supporting clients with a blend of local logistical knowledge and international procurement standards.
