Gear Oils Suppliers

Deck machinery is driven by enclosed gearboxes, and those gearboxes depend directly on the quality of the gear oils in service. They are formulated specifically for enclosed gear units that run under high load, often with long drain intervals and a real risk of water ingress.

Working with experienced marine gear oils suppliers helps ensure that technical fit, approvals and port availability all line up in practice.

Gear Oils on Board. Applications, Standards, and Typical Grades

On most vessels, gear oils are used in three main areas:

  • Thrusters
  • Propulsion and CPP gearboxes
  • Enclosed gearboxes on winches, cranes, windlasses and other deck equipment

These units demand lubricants with strong load-carrying capacity, resistance to scuffing and micropitting, good oxidation stability and protection against rust, even when some water gets into the system.

Most marine gear oils for enclosed gears are based on industrial gear oil families defined by standards such as ISO 12925-1 and DIN 51517-3. Product data sheets often describe them as CLP or industrial gear oils, then list performance levels and approvals. Viscosity is usually given in ISO VG grades - for example VG 68, 100, 150, 220 or 320 - selected according to gearbox design, speed and temperature.

A few practical selection points:

  • Application match: thruster and propulsion gearboxes often use synthetic or high-performance mineral gear oils with strong EP and micropitting performance. Smaller deck gearboxes may use more conventional CLP oils, provided they still meet the OEM specification.
  • Base oil type: mineral gear oils are common where operating conditions are moderate and oil changes are frequent. Synthetic products (for example PAO-based) are often chosen for high-load or high-temperature operation and where extended drain intervals or cold-flow properties are important.
  • Environmental requirements: in some thrusters, owners may specify Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs) that meet VGP or similar requirements. These products combine gear-oil performance with defined biodegradability and toxicity limits.
  • OEM approvals: for critical propulsion gear and thrusters, OEM approval lists are usually the starting point. Using an approved oil simplifies class discussions and avoids disputes if later gear issues occur.

In simple terms, a suitable marine gear oil is one that matches the gearbox design and duty, meets the relevant industrial and OEM standards, and can be supplied consistently wherever the vessel operates.

Enclosed Gear Lubrication Suppliers for Ships on Records Marine

Top marine gear oils distributors provide technically suitable products, and they make sure those products are actually available in the ports your vessels use. When you compare enclosed gear lubrication offers, it is worth checking:

  • Whether they can cover your main applications - propulsion gearboxes, CPPs, thrusters and deck gear - with the right ISO VG grades and base oil types.
  • If their products hold the approvals or recommendations of your gearbox and thruster manufacturers.
  • How they handle environmental needs, including EAL gear oils where required.
  • What support they offer on oil analysis, condition monitoring and drain-interval optimization.
  • How strong their port coverage is along your typical routes, so the same product can be sourced repeatedly.

Within Records Marine you can identify the best suppliers for your ships, see which brands and applications they focus on, and then contact selected companies directly. That gives technical and purchasing teams a practical way to build a small group of trusted gear oils manufacturers and distributors who can support enclosed gear lubrication across your fleet.
