Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd.
Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. (XSI) builds ships at Haicang, across the harbour from Xiamen island in Fujian. The business goes back to 1858, when a British merchant set up the Xiamen Dock Company. Fujian Shipbuilding Industry Group took it over in 1983, and the works moved from the island to Haicang in 1996. Registered capital is RMB 250 million.
The yard covers more than 500,000 square metres along 1.5 kilometres of deep-water shoreline. Production runs on one dry dock of 80,000 DWT class, two inclined slipways of 80,000 and 50,000 DWT, and three outfitting wharfs with 14 metres of water alongside. Five gantry cranes serve the yard, the largest rated 800 tonnes safe working load, then two of 300 tonnes, one of 200 and one of 100. Close to 1,900 people are employed directly, and subcontractors bring in more than 3,000 further workers. Annual output is 1.2 million deadweight tonnes, with annual production value of about RMB 5 billion.
Car carriers are the signature product. Eighteen pure car and truck carriers of 4,900-vehicle capacity had been delivered, and an order for eight of 8,500 vehicles followed. Other output includes offshore accommodation vessels, platform supply vessels, and marine surveillance and fishery administration vessels for Chinese government customers. Steel structure fabrication and erection runs alongside the shipbuilding; the published product range is newbuilding and steel structures only.
