Vigor Portland Shipyard (Swan Island)

Vigor's Portland shipyard occupies a 60-acre site on Swan Island in Portland, Oregon. It is run by Vigor Industrial LLC, which now trades as Vigor Marine Group, and its work at this site is ship repair, maintenance and modernisation for government and commercial owners. Three floating drydocks are in service: the Vigorous, which lifts 80,000 long tons, Drydock 3 at 27,000 long tons and Drydock 5 at 10,000 long tons. Twelve piers serve the yard and thirteen cranes are available, twelve of them whirley cranes lifting up to 134 tonnes and one a 600-tonne gantry. The site also holds an oversized buildway of 800 feet, 150,000 square feet of fabrication bays in 300-foot lengths, and 360,000 square feet of covered fabrication and shop space in total. Portland is set up for shipbuilding as well as repair and keeps the buildway and fabrication bays in place, but the group attributes none of its newbuilding programmes to a particular yard, so no vessel type can be assigned to this site. What company news records at Portland is naval and government repair: the icebreaker USCGC Healy, the dry cargo ship USNS Washington Chambers, the destroyer USS John S. McCain, the post-shakedown availability of USNS Earl Warren, and the littoral combat ships USS Tulsa and USS Savannah.
