Unithai Shipyard & Engineering Ltd. repairs, converts and builds ships and fabricates offshore oil and gas structures at Laem Chabang, Thailand's main deep-sea port, in the Sriracha district of Chonburi. The first vessels were docked in September 1993. The yard takes commercial and military vessels up to Aframax tanker and Panamax size, lies within about two days' sailing of Singapore, and occupies 693,300 square metres of water frontage next to the main port area, reached through protected deep water and served by rail and the highway system. Two floating docks are in service, one lifting 48,000 tonnes and one 13,500 tonnes, alongside a slipway. Lifting gear includes two tower cranes on the load-out jetty, one on a 30-metre boom lifting 10 tonnes at 15 metres and 5 tonnes at 30 metres and the other on a 25-metre boom lifting 10 tonnes at 15 metres and 6 tonnes at 25 metres; a quay crane lifting 45 tonnes at 36 metres outreach on the main hoist and 5 tonnes at 80 metres on the auxiliary hoist; and a floating crane lifting two of 50 tonnes at 22 metres and two of 30 tonnes at 32 metres. Shore facilities take in a hull shop and steel prefabrication workshop, a mechanical, electrical and shipwright workshop, a reconditioning workshop with an ultrasonic cleaning tank, and a grit plant. Every berth and workshop is supplied with 9,000 cfm of compressed air, oxygen, acetylene, fresh water, a fire main and shore power at 50 and 60 Hz. The fabrication side of the business has delivered steel structures for infrastructure projects, steel bridges, building steelwork, power plant and chemical plant structures, tank farms, beam and column structures, heavy plate bending and rolling, topside modules, a subsea station, jack-up rig structures, jackets and floating power plants. Pressure vessels are designed and built to ASME Section VIII Division 1 and Division 2, and the yard holds ASME U, U2 and R stamps. It works through joint ventures with partners in internal tank blasting and coating, corrosion control, steel fabrication, piping and insulation, and draws on local suppliers for hard chroming, remetalling, metal locking, galvanising, fibreglass work, in-situ machining, navigation instruments, boiler repairs and ultrasonic testing.
