Tema Shipyard

Tema Shipyard is a dry-docking and ship repair yard on 48.45 acres of land beside the Port of Tema in Ghana. Construction began in 1964 under the government of Ghana, as part of the infrastructure built alongside Tema Harbour. The yard is wholly state-owned and is managed and operated by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority. Two graving docks are in service. The larger takes vessels of up to 100,000 deadweight tonnes and is the yard's main asset; the smaller is used for tugs, fishing vessels and other small craft. Afloat work is done at the fitting-out quay. No newbuilding is carried out. Shipbuilding is a stated ambition for 2030 and the port authority is still looking for investors to bring it about; the declared strategic direction is to engage private sector partners on a lease and licence model. Certification covers ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018.
