Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited operates the shipyard at Pipavav, near Rajula in the Amreli district of Gujarat on India's west coast. It was incorporated in 1997 as Pipavav Shipyard Limited, renamed Reliance Naval and Engineering Limited in 2016 after a change of management, and renamed again with effect from January 2025 as Swan Defence and Heavy Industries, a step-down subsidiary of Swan Corp Limited. It trades as BSE 533107 and NSE SWANDEF. It was the first private shipyard in India licensed by the Ministry of Defence to build warships. The site covers 600 acres on a 1.2 kilometre seafront. Ship construction is built around a dry dock taking vessels of up to 400,000 DWT, the largest dry dock in India, served by a 600-tonne Goliath crane spanning 148 metres with 75 metres of hook height and four 40-tonne level-luffing cranes. A pre-erection berth of 940 metres and a fit-out berth serve the dock, with a wet basin for final outfitting. Block construction runs in 2.41 million square feet of covered fabrication, taking blocks of up to 350 tonnes, with annual steel throughput of 164,000 tonnes. The offshore yard loads out units of up to 10,000 tonnes over a jetty with 10 metres of draft, and is approved by ONGC. The business covers commercial and defence newbuilding, ship repair and refit, heavy engineering and offshore fabrication. Earlier deliveries include eight ice-class Panamax bulk carriers, seven offshore support vessels and several ship-to-shore cranes. Export orders in hand cover chemical tankers, ammonia-fuelled bulk carriers and defence vessels, alongside repair work. Heavy engineering output runs to offshore structures, cargo and vehicle inspection systems and material handling equipment. No dry dock depth or draft is published, and no certification beyond the ONGC approval.
