SIMA Callao

SIMA Callao is the main yard of Servicios Industriales de la Marina S.A. (SIMA PERU S.A.), on the Peruvian coast at Callao. Shipbuilding and repair on the site date from 1845, and the company counts more than six decades in the naval industry in its present form. It is a state company operating under private law within the policy framework of the Ministry of Defence, the General Command of the Navy and FONAFE, the state enterprise holding. Operations run from three centres: Callao, Chimbote and Iquitos, the last through the separate entity SIMA-Iquitos S.R.Ltda. Four business lines are maintained: naval construction, naval repair, metalworking, and weapons and electronics. Construction covers everything from low and high freeboard commercial ships to front-line naval units, with design, development and construction of vessels of up to 50,000 DWT assessed by international classification societies, and the product range takes in sail training ships, naval and coastguard units, itinerant platforms, barges, tugboats, fishing vessels and structural modifications. Engineering runs from design through cutting, modular fabrication, erection and installation of equipment and systems to certified testing. Maintenance and repair are carried out in dock for vessels of up to 25,000 DWT, alongside modernisation and structural modification. The best documented delivery is the sail training ship B.A.P. Union, a steel-hulled four-masted barque of 115.5 metres overall with 3,400 square metres of sail area and accommodation for 257 people, driven by a single shaft with a controllable pitch propeller that can be feathered to reduce drag under sail, with a bow thruster for berthing. Certification covers ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001, accredited through UKAS.
