Sanwa Dock Co., Ltd.

Sanwa Dock Co., Ltd. is a ship repair and conversion specialist at Shigei-cho on Innoshima, in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture. The company was founded in October 1961 as Daiichi Sempaku Gisou, took the name Sanwa Sempaku Gisou in 1962 and became Sanwa Dock in 1970 on moving to the present site. Its stated business is the repair of ships of all types together with engineering for conversion work; no newbuilding is done. As of 1 January 2024 there were 440 people on site, 300 employees and 140 outside workers. Four dry docks are in use. No. 1 takes ships of up to 4,300 gross tons, No. 3 up to 11,500, No. 5 up to 12,500 and No. 7, completed in 2016, up to 63,000. Each dock is served by three cranes and dewaters in an hour and a half. The Mekari fitting-out pier was completed in March 2007. Quay cranage reaches 50 tonnes. Work divides into hull, machinery, and electrical and piping trades, with retrofitting centred on ballast water treatment system installation, prepared using 3D laser scanning and reverse engineering to produce three-dimensional design data. Dock work includes bottom shell plate renewal and high-grade painting. The shops have been built up steadily on the Innoshima site: the first finishing shop in 1991; the machine shop, materials warehouse, interior shop and pipe shop in 1992; the West Factory with its steel, interior and second finishing shops in 2002; and the East Factory with a pipe shop, a third finishing shop and a new materials warehouse in 2017. A head office building was completed in 2016 and the Craftsmen's Base annexe in 2018. The company also keeps a sales office in Tokyo and, since 2018, a design office in Kobe. It holds ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018, both issued by ClassNK.
