Port Said Shipyard

Port Said Shipyard stands at the northern entrance of the Suez Canal and is operated by the Suez Canal Authority. Work on the site began in 1869, at the same time as the founding of the company that built the canal, and shipbuilding was added to the repair business in 1960. Newbuilding output is tugboats. Docking is entirely afloat, on floating docks named for canal history: Fakhr Al Qanah, Eid El Nasr, El Salam and Port Said. The repair quays carry water depths of up to 9 metres. Workshops occupy some 70,500 square metres. The service range is that of an industrial complex rather than a repair yard alone. Beyond ship repair and building it covers floating crane hire, quality control and non-destructive testing, metal machining and spare parts manufacture, casting and forging, sheet metal cutting, forming and welding, a carpentry and furniture shop, maintenance of mobile cranes and diesel engines, and the refilling of oxygen and acetylene cylinders. That last item matters in practice: a yard that charges its own gas cylinders is not dependent on outside supply for hot work. The Suez Canal Authority also runs the Port Tawfik yard, which specialises in fibreglass products, and provides marine salvage and underwater services. Certification covers ISO 9001:2015 for ship repair and ISO 45001:2018 for occupational health and safety.
