ODESSOS Shiprepair Yard S.A.
ODESSOS Shiprepair Yard S.A. repairs and converts ships at Varna, on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The yard lies in the southern part of the city, on the island between the old and the new sea-to-lake canals and about one nautical mile from the entrance to the port of Varna. It dates from 1 September 1955, when the dry dock was commissioned at the Georgi Dimitrov shipbuilding and ship repair works; the dock was built to take naval vessels for emergency repair in the Black Sea, which is why it is narrow for its length, and the first ship docked in it was the Bulgarian Shipka. Ship repair was later separated from shipbuilding and passed to Odessos. The company was reorganised after 1989 and became a joint-stock company in 1997 with almost entirely private capital; more than 30 million US dollars have since gone into buildings, machinery, plant and working conditions.
Three docks are in service. The graving dock takes vessels of up to 35,000 gross register tons and carries four cranes of up to 30 tonnes. Floating dock 2, in service since 1974, lifts 12,000 tonnes, carries two 15-tonne cranes and takes vessels of up to 20,000 gross register tons. Floating dock 3, commissioned in 2010 and built at Palada in Kherson under Russian Maritime Register supervision, lifts 20,000 tonnes, carries two 20-tonne cranes and takes vessels of up to 70,000 gross register tons. An earlier floating dock of 4,500 tonnes entered service in 1969 and is no longer among the yard's facilities.
Six quays are in use at an average water depth of 6.35 metres, with depths in the harbour ranging from 5.30 to 9.80 metres. Every quay and every dock is piped for compressed air, water, steam, electricity, oxygen and acetylene. The yard has seventeen lifting cranes of its own and can call on a 100-tonne floating crane, and it runs four motor tugs together with floating rafts and staging; a dock shop brings vessels in from the roads to the docks and quays and takes them out again.
Certification covers ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001:2018 and ISO 50001:2011, in each case for the repair and conversion of ships.
